Excuse me guardian of the ivory gate, but who do u think you are putting a musical group as talented and eccentric as the DMB in a category with the whore of pop, ms. britney spears! she doesnt deserve to even be part of the music industry, my dog can sing better then her. This place is for the true music lovers to come and post their reviews about Dave, not to start a fight. so if u dont like DMB then its simple, JUST LEAVE! everyone has their own taste of music and this happens to be all about Dave. so get out. anywayz i just want to say that DMB is one of the most amazing bands i have ever seen live and im going this saturday for my birthday. how awesome is that! just hearing dave sing or hearing his name spoken send shivers down my spine. I love him so much. and JIMMYDANO u rock kid. i like the way u think. Theres nothing more i can say, except that Dave is the poo so take a big whif!I LOVE DAVE MATTHEWS BAND! and by the way i was just wondering, what do u none DMB likers listen to. that head banger garbage or that pop trash, cause thats what they are just trash. I LOVE DAVE!

Dave Matthews was the most successful touring act of 2002. They sold out all 77 shows, and almost 2 million people went to see them. They brought in over 55 million dollars, and made 3 times more than Eminem...the leading money maker for all rappers last year. All people that follow Dave are diehard fans, and they have all 10 albums of his. BOTTOM-LINE...Dave matthews is touring band. They are one of if not the best act to see live in concert. I have only been to 12 shows, but I know people who have been to over 15 shows in one year. This alone tells you that they are not a pop band, and to say that they are not talented is just disrespecting to music in general. Anyone who respects music will see the 1000's of hours that each member has put into their instuments and appreciate that effort. This detication is what music is all about!!!

Being a music major in college, I'd like to give a valid opinion on the Dave Matthews talent issue here. I'm gonna break it down a bit. First Carter, I just like to say that he is about the most talented drummer I've ever heard, and believe me I've heard lots. You could stick him in any situation and he could just jam. Now for Leroi, well, I play saxophone, I have for many years, and sometimes his stuff can be a bit easy, but he makes it fit so well. His so just seem to go perfectly with song, even if they are easy, and not all of them are. One problem with him is that sometimes he drags his solos out alittle to long. Boyd is an interesting case. While his stuff isn't all exactly that difficult, it's not always made to be hard, it's made to fit in. Sure when I started playing violin I could play some of his songs, but I could never touch the solos. The key with him and Leroi is making that unique and interesting sound that makes the Dave Matthews Band what it is. It's the blend that makes them stand out. However, like Leroi, his solos tend to be a bit long. Finally Dave, his strong point is his vocals. The extreme range that he can get makes him, from my point of view, one of the top vocalist today. And his singing has improved since the band started. Listen to the older stuff, then the new, and it becomes apparent that he sings with his body, which is what you're suppost to do. As for his guitar skills, he's an excellent rythme guitarist. His chords are unique to a modern sound, and quite difficult in some places. He's real point with playing guitar is to add to that blend of the band, not to stand out as a soloist. Sure he's not as good as Tim Reynolds or Jimi, but they're aces. He never claims to be better. As for his lyrics, like them or not atleast they have meaning, unlike most new songs. Overall the Dave Matthews Band is a unique and highly talented group of musicians. They're best experienced live, improv. is one of the hardest things in music, and they're all aces at it. If you don't like the sound go back to your Blink-182 or Brittany Spears or some other piece of meaningless garbage like that.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that DMB is a true "live" band. They are true artists that can improvise songs without hours of rehersal. He can also play guitar chords that your average "real band" guitarist cant even pretend to play.

To any one that says Dave Matthews is not talented, I chalange them to watch VH1 story tellers or listen to Live at Luther College. Then tell me that he has no talent. And any one that says he is only a "solo" guiarist should know that he writes most of the songs on his own and the band members add their parts and then he adjusts his part so that it sounds good. Im not a "Dave head" that has seen 30 shows, but I say he is better than the vast majority of other bands that are manufactured to fill an economic nich. In other words, he dosnt write songs to make tons of money, have crack parties, or have his own fragrance line. In fact, Dave Matthews donates most of what he does make to foundations. If music is made to touch peoples lives then he is the best artist I know of.(Im sorry if I offended any "J-Lo" fans or boy band roadies.)

reason and I don't understand why. He has the
most annoying voice and his lyrics sound like
kindergartener wrote them. The thing that chaps
my a$$ more than anything is his fans. They
always talk about him like they know him personally.
"Hey, are you going to see Dave this weekend?"
"Have you heard Dave's new CD yet?"
DAVE WHO, YOU STUPID PIECE OF CRAP?!
I hope someone e-mails me about this
because I love getting into fights ]

Every time I turn on MTV or VH1, there they are. Dave Matthews and his gang of jolly musical retards. I cannot believe they are so popular, because they sound so corny, like old country music or something. "Intellectual"kids in my local high school who believe themselves to be "hip" and "above the pop masses" listen to this crap, oblivious to its utter sh*ttiness. I do agree with Brian, this crap is overplayed, with subpar chops and poor production. Stop these brainless whiny bastards from playing noise before it's too late!
Here's a partial list of bands that can kick DMB's azz:
Shakira
Dream Theater
Britney Spears
Spice Girls
Hell, even that idiot Kid Rock is better than these talentless androids!

the dave matthews band is by far the best band i've ever heard. never in my life have i been influenced so much by music. they are about as good as music talent can get. and even if some people dont enjoy them (which is totally insane to me) this music is a therapy to some people. I believe that dave is a prophet. he amazes me every time i hear them. dave's voice and lyrics backed up by the music that the band produces(real music by the way) is really awesome. we are really blessed to have talent like the dave matthews band.

it's good to know that i'm not the only one who has been affected by the dave matthews band. my therepy and my celebration all at once, and who could ask for anything more. i'm not saying they are gods, but i look up to them as musicians (especially LeRoi Moore; i'm a woodwind player) and i revel in dave's poetry. "Wash out this tired notion that the best is yet to come" – Pig. thank you all. i refuse to be drawn into this argument, as i do not respect the opposite side; they have given me no reason to. i'll be around.

BRIAN: that last comment was addressed to you; i forgot to tell you. and also, you weren't just saying that DMB sucks. anyone could go through your comments and be able to tell you that you were attacking the fans and trying to make people mad. i'll go on and let you in on a little secret. it's really hard (nearly impossible) to go around making claims about ANY band or type of music. the truth is, different music means different things to different people. you'll never be able to ridicule a band without offending fans as well. music is always "good" as long as it has meaning. and to say that any band sucks is a personal interpretation, probably made with a closed mind. i'm willing to bet that you never really gave DMB a chance and were annoyed by the fact that they got so much publicity before you even heard them play a single note. it's like guys and chick-flicks. why don't guys like them? they go in KNOWING it's going to be some sappy love story not worth watching. they don't even give them a chance (although most sappy love stories all follow some common framework and get boring after a while -- course, this is just MY opinion). you can let yourself like any movie by really going in with an open mind, and really empathizing with the main characters. it's the same with music. haven't you ever heard a song or style that you thought was different or weird at first (maybe even annoying) until you began to listen to it over and over? that's how it is with a lot of modern punk and contemporary jazz. it's got a lot of meaning and power in it if you stop, open your mind, and actually listen to it. So really, Brian, you'll never be able to make a good argument against any band you don't like, becaue truth is, there isn't a good argument. especially against the Dave Matthews Band. but if you still are up for arguing that their lyrics have no meaning, all their songs sound alike, all their songs repeat within themselves, or whatever, go RIGHT ahead and be my guest. i would absolutely LOVE the opportunity to defend good music, as would everyone else who appreciates DMB. just look at all these faithful fans. c'mon, Brian. even YOU should have been able to look at the sheer number of fans and decide that DMB was not some unmusical, pop band with no talent.
Posted by jimmydano:
yeah that's what i thought. don't mess with dave matthews or dave matthews fans if you can't back up what you say. now if you CAN back up what you say then go right ahead and give it your best shot. i doubt, though, that you'll make any progress or be able to build an argument that i won't be able to prove completely wrong. (not because i am a great debator or anything like that, but because the music is so good and so true that it defends itself.)

You're never going to be able to make a good point and get people to actually listen to you if you go around making fun of everyone who tries to build an argument. I'm willing to acknowledge some of YOUR arguments and defend DMB if you're willing to calm down and stop trying to make people mad.

I am not basing my idea on 4 songs, this is the most recent event. {{run-on sentence}} Rediculous? That must be red neck {{not two words}} for Ridiculous. DMB fans are truly retards {{forget the period?}}
Why bother to go to a concert, {{delete comma; insert the word “if” or “when”}} they're all the same. I honestly wanted to give Dave a chance {{missing a comma}} so I had my friend play some of his songs for me. After about 4 songs, I asked her why she was playing the same song over and over, {{add a conjunction}} turns out she wasn't, {{end sentence}} HIS SONGS ARE ALL THE SAME!!!
To address an earlier comment. {{fragment}} Someone said that Dave was only a rhythm guitarist. Correct me if I am wrong, {{use semicolon, not comma}} there is a drummer, bassist, violinist and a saxaphone {{spell much? that’s saxophone}} player, leaving Dave with the sole Guitar part, {{end sentence}} who's the lead guitarist???

To Peehead:I want to burn off your "head" and "pee" on the ashes. And then sing DMB songs till the cows come home, you heartless son of a bitch. Dave Matthews BAnd is one of the most talented and poetic artists out there. I've been to about 55 of their concerts, and there different and unique everytime. You can be so free there, and forget about your troubles (and get high at the same time). And it never, ever gets boring. To all the other Dave haters, you guys don't know what you are missing. And to all the DMB lovers, we don't need to prove ourselves to these ignorant, close-minded people. Spread the love and words of DMB. (DMB fans: don't forget, one day real soon, he's mine!)

I don't personally like the DMB, but They're a lot better than some of the crap that's out there. To the person who wrote that he can't stand DMB b/c the songs are overplayed on the radio, it's not the bands fault for how many times the radio plays them. They actually have some pretty catchy tunes on thier cds too. (My sister is obsessed,I would know.)Why people spend thier time trying to dis bands is beyond me. When I see your face on T.V. or your voice on the radio making buttloads of money, then you can complain. It is a**holes like you that make me ramble on about a band I honestly don't really like. Thanks, I just had to get that off my chest.

What is that Bull?? Creating an image through his lyrics?? If I said don't think about zebras, you are going to try so hard not to think about zebras that you ultimately do. All artists can make you picture the scene, as can authors and any other Joe Schmoe. Unfortunately my room mate listens to him, and when I can stand it, I listen in. He repeats phrases over and over throughtout the song, not offering any new ideas for us to work with, yet you sheep admire him as you would a god. He can strum his guitar, yes, he can repeat phrases over and over, yes, but he is far from a talented musician. It is a true misfortune to the music world that such a second rate musician is placed amongst some of the best bands today.

The songs of Dave Matthews are poetry set to music. In his works, Matthews implements rhyme schemes that are far from conventional and imagery that creates tableaus in the head of the listener. The use of the five pleasures is very common in his lyrics. The song “Recently” is a prime example; it includes pleasures such as imagination, craftsmanship, and recognition. Matthews’s interesting rhyme patterns and usage of alliteration also lend a hand in turning “Recently” into a piece of poetry.
Listening to this song causes a flurry of images to run through the listener’s head. He makes great usage of the imagination pleasure in the third and fifth stanzas. The first three lines of the third stanza are “She comes to me, I watch her drink, I watch her comb her hair”. After reading these three lines, one would almost immediately visualize the scene of a man watching his beloved perform these mundane tasks. These lines are also the best example of a particular form of craftsmanship in which Matthews uses the technique of phrase repetition. The repetition of phrases really draws attention to any differences in the phrases. In this case Matthews thoroughly wants to convey that the girl is drinking and combing her hair, two very inconspicuous activities. The fifth stanza contains another powerful stimulation of the imagination. The speaker talks of kissing and holding his lover. Matthews’s words conjure up the all too familiar images of two lovers locked in an everlasting embrace.
Perhaps the force behind the powerful images comes not only from imagery, but also from the stimulation of the recognition pleasure. Almost everyone has observed a loved one performing everyday tasks, and the powerful embrace of two lovers is the pinnacle of every love story. The recognition pleasure is also used in the chorus where “people stare” at the two lovers while they are in public. Anyone who has performed for an audience or caused an embarrassing scene knows what it is like to be the center of attention. This easily recognizable situation allows the reader to know how the couple feels in this situation.
Matthews implements a very irregular rhyme scheme in this work. However, there is a method to this madness. In the first stanza, the repetition of the word “been” does not always occur at the end of each line, but the word does occur on rhythmically accented parts within each line. This repetition resembles stuttering of someone who is having a hard time expressing how they feel. Alliteration in the fifth stanza has the same affect, where Matthews repeatedly uses words beginning in w, such as “where”, “will”, and several uses of “we”. Without this repetition, the speaker’s amazement and inexperience with the way he feels is not as easily conveyed.
In the third and fifth stanza, the long e sound is repeated many times. Matthews’s even decides to cast off proper diction in the fifth stanza where he uses “she and me” instead of she and I. Other long e sounds in this stanza include the use of “be” and “we”. In the third and fifth stanzas the speaker is very happy, and Matthews coerces the reader of these lyrics to smile as he/she vocalize each of the long e sounds, much the same as when a photographer instructs his/her focus to say “cheese”. Annunciating the long e sound puts a smile on one’s face and this helps the reader to share the feelings of the speaker.
Matthews’s use of rhyme scheme, alliteration, and a combination of imagination, recognition, and craftsmanship make “Recently” a great song and a great piece of poetry. It can be argued that many of Matthews’s lyrics are pieces of poetry. With his use of many classical elements of poetry in combination with his own unique style, this argument is easily made.

By Dave Matthews
Recently I've been
All of content and dreaming I have been
'Cause I been lately seeing
Quite a bit of this woman live on my street
People stare and we just ignore everything
People stare and we just ignore them
And they go away, go away
She comes to me
I watch her drink
I watch her comb her hair
Both say that we never before have
Felt as recently
People stare and we just ignore
What's the use in hiding out
She says all the time
Let their eyes do the worrying about it
She and me go to places quiet
Where we are quite alone
Kiss and we hold together
We will be until we done
People stare and we just ignore
What's the use in hiding out
She says all the time
Let their eyes do the worrying about it
Walk and talk we both do quite well
And kissing all the time
Kissing all the time
And I’m looking forward to much more
People stare and we just ignore everything
People stare and we just ignore them
And they go away, go away

Actually I don't have a comment about whether dave is cool, talented, ect. I just wanted to know if anyone bought his new live CD......cuz is it just me or are the songs on it the exact same ones as on other live albums????

He never forgets where hes comin from.
Now let's see...whats wrong with all that? He's an incrediblly talented artiist and hes supplying the goods and for the people that appreciate it, great. For the people that don't, fine. He is one of the few artists who actually supports Napster. He ENCOURAGES people to record his live shows and share them with other people. I'm not saying listen to Dave 24/7(though thats not a bad thing) all I'm sayin is the guy has talent. That's obvious. Yeah he's on the radio a lot but I think you're reachin when you say EVERY station is playing him. If you don't like it go buy a CD player. And EVERY staion isn't playing him ALL the time.WHat the hell are you listening to? DJ's seriously need help anyway, they only play certain songs like "The Space Between" which even I am a little sick of. In spite of that, this in NO way shows what kind of an artist he is. He doesn't MAKE the DJ's play his stuff. They do because they choose to, because people WANT hear it. In my opinion, Dave rocks!

The fact of the matter is, everyone here raises interesting points. No, Dave is not the best guitaritst ever; a person would be ignorant to argue that he was. Yes, Brian, Jimi and Clapton and Santana can all play better than him. They are what we call LEAD guitarists, while Dave is mainly rythym. And he has never claimed to be the best. He simply plays, and people listen. If you like it you do, if you don't, you don't. As far as the DMB being "Pop", i will agree that some of thier music might have pop leanings, or certain elements of "pop", but the DMB is by no means "pop". Why must we label all music as one type or another, and not just accept it on the merits of being music that we like. And as far as there never being a "great pop artist", what the hell do you think the Beatles were, or Michael Jackson, or the Beegees? The Beatles early work was absolutely pop, and it is still awesome. And just because it is "pop" or "mainstream" does not devalue it as music. I will admit that i do not care for most pop, but that does not mean that there is not some decent pop out there. And like so many others have told you Brian, if you do not like his music, no one is forcing you to listen to it, review it, or comment on it.

l come from a long line of musicians (in my family of course). l myself have played the violin for years, everything from Classical to Fiddle and in between...l do not think Dave's music necessarily brings out the complex talent l believe Boyd has, though he certainly adds to the music. My brother also has been playing the guitar for many years and has alot of teens to 30 year olds asking him to teach them Dave's music and after having to teach so much of todays other music, he says, "it's a nice break from most of the crap!!!" Though my brother prefers complex jazz music, he appreciates The Dave Matthews Band and l adore them, because to me they are different, Soulful and Everything that Dave touches with his Poetic Pen turns to gold for me...l love turning him on after playing Beethoven, violin style...

He just plays. Some people enjoy it, and some don't. But one thing I don't understand is how you guys are saying that the bands music is "Pop"
It's far from it. N'Sync is pop. All of the so-called rap out there is pop. The dave matthews band is not. Leroi Moore is an amamzing saxaphonist, as is Boyd tinsley on the violin. How many "pop" bands do you know of that have a saxaphone and I violin?

In responce to Brian, when II say you cans ee talent in all his songs, it's because he uses it to write them. I mean, excuse him for not changing every singal chord to please everyone. If you even listened to a whole album you would know they don't all sound the same. It's not Daves fault that you can't tell the difference.

In response to Lindsay's comments, of course YOU can see his talent in all his songs, they all sound alike. He is faaaar from the most talented musician. Jimi could play better guitar than him, Clapton is a god, Santana even can play better than him. Lyrically, he sucks ass. Plain and simply.

Dave Matthews has to be the single most talented artist the music world has ever met. In more ways than one he has proven this talent and in every song you can see it. I've been a fan since his first album and he has never failed to surpass my expectations. I don't even understand how some people can actually say "All he does is strum his acoustic guitar...." as MickDundee said. So to people like Mick and Paul Hogan, you people need to get your head out of your butt and know what real music is. And to say he only strums his acoustic guitar or whatever just shows how little you know about real talent. If you have a problem with any of that, fine. Go ahead, e-mail me. It's DMBfan_3@mtv.com. I'll find it interesting if you can actually form a whole sentence. Rock on DMB!!!

What you think you are tight because you have a fiddle in your band, please..i feel sorry for all you f@gs who think "Dave" is god or whatever. Dave Matthews has done nothing but convince weak minded teens into thinking he's something special. Listen to some real music, no wait, forget that keep listening to your little trendy b1tch so you can be cool. I think its a miracle that so many people like this sh1t.

I just started listening to DMB this year thanks to my good friend Billy(thanx man!!). Well, i just went to DMB's 6/6/01 concert here at Turner Field. It was so awesome, this guys is so damn talented. Carter is amazing on the drums, and so is every other member of the band. There music just pumps me up and get me goin'!!!

For all of you idiot non-musicians who don't think dave has musical talant, you're wrong. Being a musician, its extrememly obvious to me to tell that dave and his bandmates are possibly the most talanted group on tour today.
Brian
Where's the talent, all his songs sound the same and lack any good qualities. I can't tell the difference between one song and another. Besides, his song are Pop and no Poptart can be a truly great musician. Those that listen to Dave obviously have no musical ear and only wish to be part of the bandwagon seen. I just hope DMB goes away, and soon.

DMB is one of the only truly musically gifted groups of the latter part of the twentieth century. people say they are a "college band"--but define college band. so many bands start out on the college scene and go on to great things--dave matthews is definitely one of them. most all of the people who criticize dave either have never really listened to them or are too caught up in their stupid overly angry sh*t that requires no musical talent.
dan
holy crap dave matthews is terrible. you want talent, listen to adamantium or poison the well. dave matthews appeals to college frat kids and art queers who know jack about music.

You go to hell, Dave Matthews is heavy! They make me want to headbang and stuff cause metal is cool!
Jake
What is the attraction of DMB's music? I don't see it. It's weak.
Brian
I agree, Dave Matthews is so overrated. If he were to sh*t in a bag and put his name on it, people would run out to buy it just because it's Dave. My friends and I were watching SNL when they came on, and out of respect I listened, and it truly sucked, so I expected my friends to agree, but no, they all thought it was great, only because they are blind to the fact that it lacks any backbone, and is just plain old pop sh*t. There is nothing that makes him better than all the other musicians. I just hope that they break up or something soon because I know I am very sick of them.

Dave Matthews Band is the worst excuse for music that I've ever heard. I'd rather stick flaming forks up my nose than listen to any of their music. It is absolutely horrid. If you like Dave Matthews, you deserve to be slapped in the front tooth.
dave matthews is
OVERRATED! I'm so f*cking sick of him!

In a time of fabricated pop nonsense, Dave Matthews Band proves that Honest-to-goodness musicians are still out there filling stadiums. Each member of the band is unbelievably talented, and it is really something to see them play together live. Dave's lyrics blend perfectly with the music to create a show enjoyable for a very widespread audience. When they add geniuses like Tim Reynolds and Bela Fleck to the mix, they get sounds even more unique than their already innovative style. I would go so far as to call it magical. Everything fits together perfectly when they play. They truly are the greatest studio and live band around.

just wanted to say that not only is dave the most talented musician on the face of this earth, and by far the most beautiful... if anyone ever has the chance to see him live... go! i saw him twice this year and he puts on the best show...definately fan oriented!

I think that Dave Matthews is quite possibly the greatest man ever. His music makes me smile.
