Black Sails in the Sunset is A.F.I.'s latest release on Nitro Records; and if ever there is a triumphant meeting between hardcore and punk
rock, then this is it. With this release A.F.I. have managed to take their musical style a step further with material that is heavier than their
previous releases. A.F.I. are back with a new line-up and a solid album that separates A.F.I. from the rest.
A.F.I.'s biography goes a bit like this: A.F.I. is an East Bay-rooted, four-piece band that has been together since 1991. Now new confirmed
members, Hunter, of the Force and Jade Puget, formerly of Redemption 87, are providing a new dimension to long time drummer, Adam
Carson, and singer, Davey Havok. A.F.I.'s discography has been well documented, dating back to their first release in '91 (a split 7-inch with
Loose Change on Key Lime Records) to Answer That and Stay Fashionable (re-issued on Nitro in '97). Very Proud of Ya in '96, Shut Your
Mouth and Open Your Eyes in '97, and now Black Sails in the Sunset, which hits the street May 18, 1999.
Black Sails in the Sunset delivers 13 songs that support one another and reveal how A.F.I. have not only developed musically but lyrically as
well; and just one listen to this new album will show you exactly what they have to offer--potent, permeating, sharp sounds and sing-a-longs.
According to Havok, "We play hardcore, just not in the vein of Sick of It All or the Cromags. At the same time it's not quite like L.A.'s Flag;
hence the birth of East Bay Hard Core."
Black Sails in the Sunset is filled with meaningful lyrical depth, bass lines that are screaming at the forefront, guitar that has much more
crunch, harder drumming, and vocals that are cutting with a heartfelt intensity that will leave you shaking. Black Sails in the Sunset is not
representing just any sound. It's displaying and broadening the possibilities of hard core and what it means to A.F.I.
A.F.I. will be hitting the road in support of Black Sails in the Sunset with extensive touring in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Canada. A.F.I.
have toured with Rancid, the Offspring, L7, Sick of It All, Good Riddance, and new, label mates, Ensign. So look for them on tour well into the
new millennium.
