By definition, a bridge is a structure built over an
impasse enabling people to cross. However, The
Bridge is much more. The Bridge, a pop duo based in
Tempe, Arizona, consists of Ron Taylor and Drew
Smith, two songwriters who have come full circle after
thirteen years.
Taylor and Smith met in Houston in 1982 and soon
combined their talents in the bands Bittersweet and
Stiff. After recording and touring for the next three
years, they parted ways and pursued very different
paths. Taylor went on to record two albums for MCA
Records and two for Grand Slamm/IRS, selling over
250,000 records worldwide as lead vocalist for the
rock act Lillian Axe. Smith earned an Electronics
Engineering degree and then opened Northwind
Recording Studios, which he designed and built
himself.
In October of 1994, "construction" began on what is
now The Bridge. The two began writing together
again and soon realized that their strong songwriting
talents, combining Taylor's unique voice and creative
harmonies with Smith's melodic blend of guitar and
piano, were the start of something very special. Their
first new song in ten years, "What She Said," proved
that time had molded their influences and tastes, and
taken them into a new musical direction.
Nearly three years later, The Bridge is still standing
strong. When asked why they chose The Bridge as
their name, the guys said, "We feel our music is the
bridge that links our hearts and thoughts to all those
who listen." After hearing the thought-provoking
"Standing," it's easy to see just how true that
statement is.
Lately they've been playing acoustic shows in coffee
shops around Phoenix and have entered the next
phase of building The Bridge: acquiring a recording
contract and finally releasing their first album
together.
It took thirteen years for Taylor and Smith to come full
circle, and the result is nothing short of fantastic.
Take one listen to The Bridge and you'll find yourself
enveloped in an experience which will lead you into
many wonderful horizons.
