| This innovative and much imitated Irish folk-rock band
comprised Barry Devlin (bass/vocals), Declan Sinnott
(lead guitar/vocals), Eamonn Carr (drums/vocals),
Charles O'Connor (violin), and Jim Lockhart
(flute/violin/keyboards). Sinnott, later joined Moving
Hearts and was replaced by Gus Gueist and John
Fean in turn. Horslips, formed in 1970 and took the
theme of Irish legends for many of their songs.
The group toured as support to Steeleye Span
and featured a complete performance of The Tain, a
more rock-based recording than their previous
recordings. Feans guitar work could switch from the
melodic style of 'Aliens', to the much heavier 'Man
Who Built America'. They maintained a strong cult
following, but, only one album, The Book Of
Invasions - A Celtic Symphony, reached the UK Top
40. The Man Who Built America received a lot of
air-play when it was released in 1979, but wider
acceptance evaded them, and the group split. Fean,
O'Connor and Carr later formed Host, with Chris
Page (bass), and Peter Keen (keyboards), in order to
pursue the folk path still further.
