This is easily one of the most influential bands of all time, and most people only know 3 songs (All Day & All of the Night, You Really Got Me, Lola). What a shame! Everything from 1964 to 1972 is a must have from these guys. All music lovers who do not know the Kinks very well need to check them out ASAP.
For starters, their best album in my opinion is Arthur: Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire. This gem was released in 1969 and is often compared to the Who's Tommy. Arthur is a near flawless album, and once you hear it you'll see just how much influence the Kinks had over rock. Ray Davies writing is at it's best hear -- funny like the opening line to Victoria ("long ago grass was green, sex was bad and obscene") or anti-establishment like in Brainwashed ("the aristocrats and beauroctats are diry rats for making you what you are") to sarcastic (the entire She's bought a Hat song). This is a MUST have album for any music fan. It's witty, it's layered, and it rocks.
