Nirvana broke through with a style never heard before and completely original. To anyone who is fed up with the pop-rock nirvana copies on MTV I recommend two bands with distinct sounds that I believe are the best things going right now. For a more heavy taste there's system of a down, a totally original band who's influence,I believe, could rival that of Nirvana or Led Zeppelin if they keep going. For a more moderate taste I reccomend Queens of the Stone age who have been described as the new nirvana. Their stoner rock sound is leaps and bounds ahead of mainstream rock.

Nirvana was a main reason that I was inspired to begin playing guitar. I think that they were a landmark in Rock History and changed an ultra-crappy 80's music industry into something that would turn into the rock that people listen to today. Without Kurt and the Boys who knows what may have developed..Ohh shat...I eat my words already, Point in case...Britney Spears...I guess some things can't be stopped especially a pretty face that holds no talent and no lyrical ability. Anyway, Nirvana will still be in my books as one of the most influential bands of the 20th Century.

A teen idol yes. little more than that yes. when u guys grow up youll realise that grunge was a just a phase, although it was great, it was just a phase and there have been much better bands gracing this earth in the past and present. just open your eyes and ears. part of the reason why people say Nirvana are the best (rant rant) is because they havent been exposed to more styles, etc of music or their going through a depression phase (like i did). theres heaps of great music out there, seek and you shall find.

i agree (mostly) with Randy. Give it up people, he's dead and that's all that matters. of course somebody's to blame for it, but that shouldnt be the only thing keeping you interested in nirvana. They were a great band and should be remembered for their music and the impact they had rather than kurt dying. It's only becaue of the people who wont stop talking about how he died that about 1/4 of the world thinks nirvana is only famous because kurt died. (and believe me, about 1/4 of the world actually thinks that) and dont get me wron i want to know what happened too. But he died, he was ment to die, he isnt coming back, and regardless of what happened to him he probably dint mind that he died all too much.

NIrvana, in my opinion, is one of the greatest bands of all time. Kurt was a teenage icon then and still is today. Kurt's lyrics let people realize they arent the only people feeling this. Everyone that knows the lyrics gets a different idea of what its about.
The sound of Nirvana is just great as the lyrics. With their edgy,raw,down to earth,grungy appearance and sounds.

There is no denying that Nirvana was and is one of the best bands of all time. not only were they very good, because there are lots of bands that are good, but they were revelutionary. they started somthing completely their own. i dont believe they started 'depressing, self hate' music, there were bands before them who sang about that kind of stuff, but they did start a whole genre of music. before them, not all, but most lyrics were simple and had to rhyme and such. it's great what they did for music. oh, and by the way perl jam doesnt have one little thing on nirvana. ugh! how can people stand eddie vedder's voice. Nirvana's just a great band, and weather you like them or not, respect what they did.

I think Nirvana was the most incredible,and original rock band ever. They made amazing music. I loved all of they're cd's. Smells like teen spirit was the songs that defined nirvana. i think that there will never be another band like nirvana. I just hope that 50 years from now people will still listen to nirvana. Nirvana is definatly huge ifluence to all music. However, Pearl Jam has by far been a much bigger part of music. They did not end their success by getting caught up in drugs. They have fought ticketmaster and are very politically active. They also have some of the greatest rock songs ever recorded in their name. I think without a doubt, Pearl Jam is much better and more influential.

All the warnings from the punk rock 101 courses over the years. Since my first introduction to the, shall we say, ethics involved with independence and the embracement of your community has proven to be very true. I haven't felt the exitement of listening to as well as creating music along with reading and writing for too many years now. I feel guilty beyond words about these things. For example when we're backstage and the lights go out and the manic roar of the crowd begins it doesn't affect the way in which it did for Freddy Mercury who seemed to love and relish in the love and adoration from the crowd. Which is something I totally admire and envy. The fact is I can't fool you. Any one of you. It simply isn't fair to you or me. The worst crime I can think of would be to put people off by faking it and pretending as if I'm having 100 % fun. Sometimes I feel as if I should have a punch in time clock before I walk out on stage. I've tried everything within my power to appreciate it, and I do. God, believe me I do but it's not enough.
I appreciate the fact that I and we have affected and entertained a lot of people. I must be one of one of those narcissists who only appreciate things when they're gone. I'm too sensitive. I need to be slightly numb in order to regain the enthusiasm I once had as a child. On our last three tours I've had a much better appreciation for all the people I've known personally and as fans of our music, but I still can't get over the frustration, the guilt and empathy I have for everyone. There's good in all of us and I think I simply love people too much. So much that it makes me feel too f*cking sad. The sad little, sensitive, unappreciative, pisces Jesus man! Why don't you just enjoy it? I don't know. I have a goddess of a wife who sweats ambition and empathy and a daughter who reminds me too much of what I used to be.
Full of love and joy kissing every person she meets because everyone is good and will do her no harm. And that terrifies me to the point to where I can barely function. He wasnt amazing on the guitar, yes his songs are very playable power chord style stuff, but his lyrics were amazing and yes they were depressing but that is your state of mind, the way you interpret his songs.Someone who can move you to this point cannot be called untalented. He did try to kick the heroine, but he also had this hideous stomach disease and he was so troubled and depressed and alone.
He wrote a piece about this scary little boy who licked animal ribcages to see if they felt like the roof of his mouth.He was scared and he was the teen, the one that everyone is but hides well. So dont judge or slander him, his music was his voice and no one can deny how well he used it.

Kurt was greatly influenced by his love for punk rock. He liked led (they are all gods by the by) and the melvins. His lyrics were all his beliefs and random thoughts and yes his suicide really did bring the band even more fame. I really greatly dislike bands like blink. However as long as there are people who like them no one is going to care about the people who dont. I think nirvana are incredible. There songs are pretty easy to play but i dont care because they really have helped a lot of teenagers woth their'grunge'music, i think they deserve all the credit they got and were a worthy bands. I would also now like to say that im really ignorant towards and kind of music. Im a great fan of metallica yet i only have two of their albums.the same with led.i read about my bands but dont pretend i kniw all about them. I think that music is the greatest art, and i do more than just play the guitar. as well as metallica i listen to hole and nirvana. so sue me metal heads.

hey brooke my name is nicole. i dont live far from seattle. i kinda know how to get to his house. first of all tho, you would want to take a plane to the sea-tac (seattle-tacoma) airport.his house was on the lake which is alot of seattle but i think the adress is 171 E. Lake Washingnton Blvd. and it is down a long driveway that is kinda a hill and it goes down to a large house surrounded by trees. the room he died in was "the greenhouse" the room above the garage.

Every time listin to nirvana you know your real everytime you think about nirvana your real. They gave a home for every punked out kid or even adults to stay. First thier was Bleach NIRVANA was still with Sub Pop. NIRVANA's first album was released in the June of 1989. The first 1,000 copy's of Bleach were pressed on white vinyl pressings. The next 2,000 copies included a limited edition poster. This album had "About a girl" which was the most popular song.These are all the songs that made up Bleach: Blew, Floyd the Barber, About a Girl, School, Love Buzz, Paper Cuts, Negative Creep, Scoff, Mr. Moustache, Siftings, Big Cheese, and Downer. The song About a Girl was written for Kurdt's (Kurt spelled his name "Kurdt Kobain"on the credits of Bleach to "be confusing" and because he wanted to remain somewhat anonymous) girlfriend, Tracy, who was kicking him out at the time. The song Mr. Moustache was written for the red necks who had moustaches. Where Kurt grew up, you could tell that a person was a "macho man" if they had a moustache. Kurt drew a comic that can be found in Come as You Are by M. Azzerad on page 98 that shows how Kurdt thought about "macho men". Bleach was also before Dave Grohl joined NIRVANA. The drummer was Chad Channing. That album was just a tase of what they could do. The other tracks that helped to make it number one for what seems like forever are as follows: "Breed", "Territorial Pissings", "Drain You", "Lounge Act", "Stay Away", "On a Plain", and "Something in the Way". With that album thier succes was just blooming. In Utero. At first, there was some controversy in releasing In Utero. Stores like K-Mart and Walmart didn't "approve"of the art on the back, claiming that it was depicting "to much" (it had pictures of unborn fetuses, etc.). They changed the art and the title of the song "Rape Me" to "Waif Me" (pretty lame, huh?). The original copy of the cd is still available at stores like Music Land. In Utero's song "Heart-Shaped Box" topped off almost right away. "All Apologies" is another one of my favorites. Other songs include:"Serve the Servants", "Scentless Apprentice", Rape Me (Waif Me)", "Frances Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle", "Dumb", "Very Ape", "Milk It", "Pennyroyal Tea", "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter", and "Tourette's". Incesticide Was a grundging thrash metal cd which was a druged up album. Then was a very depressing moment in the world were unplugged took place you could tell what kurt was going through.NIRVANA, Unplugged in New York" was a great collection of hits. These are the songs from "unplugged":About a Girl, Come As You Are, Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam, The Man Who Sold the World, Dumb, Polly, On a Plain, Something in the Way, Plateau, Oh Me, Lake of Fire, All Apologies and Where Did You Sleep Last Night. Im going to start off extremely cliche but someone obviously dubbed this completely perfect description of this wonderful band before I had the chance! Nirvana completely evolutionized the rock industry! They came onto the scene like an unstopable force, and left the scene with a big bang, and they did it all in the blink of an eye! (I think that most most music critics agree that unlike our lives, rock music was founded on the big bang theory, and its name was Nirvana) I ask myself this often, did I appreciate nirvana as a band when Kurt was still gracing us with his presence, or did I realize my addiction and near lust for their music after I realized they were gone forever? I think some new found fans are compeled to the music by the legacy and mysteries of Kurt Cobain, instead of the band as a whole!!

I was 5 when Kurt died and I was devisated. U c I wasn't as much In2 the band as i WAS in2 kurt. nirvana is one awesome band and kurt didnt commit suicide despite what everyone thinks. it wouldnt have physically been possible. and there was no suicide note, that note was simply saying that he was quitting the music business. i read it a million times and nowhere does it say anything in it about killing himself, except the very last lines, which authorities believe the handwriting wasnt his.

First of all, Nirvana rules. It may not be the greatest band ever, but it's better than all those crap u hear today. For those of u who hate nirvana, u probably only heard one or two songs. There are many great songs that u don't hear on the radio or MTV that is made from Nirvana. And for the people who thinks Kurt is a whiner and his music is too depressing, well music is a form of art and expresses emotions not like those sissy boy bands and pop stars who sings about how happy they are and crap.

LithiumBliss hit it right on the nail. Kurt wasn't some shred guitarist, but an excellent songwriter. Anyone who truly knows what music and art are about, they should know one of the fundamental rules. Delivery is more important than technique. A good example of what I'm talking about is the theme song to Jaws. In the theme song to Jaws, John Williams created the ultimate terrifying sound with just two notes on an oboe. If technique is the most important thing, then the best song would be one with an hour-long guitar solo, but in reality that would get really boring after a while. Kurt was a subtle songwriter. He knew about subtletyly. He wrote short songs with great riffs and memorable hooks. Coupled with pretty deep lyrics at times.

Even thought they are notorious for many things (namely Kurt Cobains supposed suicide), Nirvana is still one of the most underrated bands ever. Even though im a fanatic, i dont think its unfair to say that Nirvana was one of the most influential bands in punk and alternative rock, and not only rock,but the entire music industry as a whole. He died before i had a chance to understand what Kurt was all about, and its obvious he wasnt in it for the life style. The drugs were only a sidetrack. He was in it to connect with the fans, and his music has impacted me in that he has the ability to connect to teenagers very,VERY well. He understood our plight and not many understood his. Being 14 many people are skeptical of if I really understand what im saying, but he wouldve been the type to listen. Though I didnt know him personally, his music was enough. Nirvana were definately the biggest and most controversial band of the 90's despite them being around for a realatively short period of time. Kurt Cobain was a superb song writer who churned out great rock ballads as well as some heavy stuff. Nirvana's most famous song was 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', this was a worldwide hit but the band got bored playin it as the 'trendy' fans deemed it as their only song but this was not the case. They made a lot of other great songs e.g. Come As You Are, About A Girl and Heart-Shpaed Box- only to name a few. Oh Nirvana, I have so many mixed feelings about them. Of course I own all their albums, they ARE Nirvana, afterall. It's the kind of music that reaches out and grabs you, it's that 'angry' rock. As for Kurt himself, I've read a lot about him. Seems to me he was a lost soul. He was a bit childish and selfish. He couldn't decide what he really wanted. He wanted people to listen to his music, but once people started taking notice, he felt that he was a sort of 'sellout'. He also hated his fans. He thought that none of them truly 'got' his music. I can sympathize with that. He didn't feel worthy of all that attention and fame, because he was only writing what was in his heart, and to think other people might actually be able to relate to that was unthinkable to him. He was pretty mixed up. But he DID kill himself. He had it all planned out. Sure, everyone hates Courtney and would like to blame her for it. But the fact of the matter is, Kurt wanted to die. He was in physical and emotional pain all the time. I mean, come on-he wrote a song called "I Hate Myself And Want To Die". How much more self-explanatory can you get? I think he killed himself in part because he didn't want to become a parody of himself. He couldn't have handled the fact that if he kept recording, he could never out-do himself. His music would eventually get old and stale, just like his ideas. He couldn't live with that. He might have been selfish, but he sure had a lot of pride! Bottom line is, Nirvana rocked. They paved the way for many many musicians. But I think Kurt was really onto something. Think about it,people. Everyone is dissing Ozzy, the Stones, and Aerosmith for being stale, and how they should RETIRE and GIVE IT UP. Would you all be saying that about Kurt if he were still here? Most likely, yes. I'm glad that Kurt is dead. That stupid little punk got what he deserved: coming on television to make some music, churning out feces that rotted the minds of youth everywhere and supported the Prozac industry, and then thinking that he has such a tough life and all (yeah, right, living in the lap of luxury) doing drugs and suicide. I don't know why anyone would think of him as more than a misguided little whiner with no guitar skill. Stupid little rich college-bound Caucasian kids with nothing to be depressed about suddenly get depressed when they listen to this trash, thinking that it's "deep" or something. Nirvana fans are the same kind of people that listen to Tool and other crapy bands. Kurt is rotting in hell right now for his sins against the music industry, while Dream Theater and others are rebuilding the empire of greatness that was progressive rock. Good riddance to grunge.

Nirvana, it's a state of mind that when you have no desire. Nirvana not only changed the world of music and the way people picture the world forever, but the way they played their music was outragious. People say Kurt Cobain was a horrible guitar player...he may have been a horrible guitar player but the reason you listen to music and the reason why music influences so many people is because of the lyrics in the music. The way kurt showed himself through music was GENIUS. Nobody could ever take the place of his mind and his beauty. The people that say Nirvana sucked...then tell me why? huh? Why? listen, nirvana basically invented a very useful trait in modern music: the loud chorus, soft verse. Who the hell did it before them and was successful at it? No one. Who does it now that's successful? Everyone. All of those trash rap/rock/'mallcore' bullshat that is out on the radio making me wish I died right with Kurt. Is that why they were great? A little bit, but also all three of them, not just Kurt, loved music so much that it was the only thing in the world that would make them happy. When you get to that point, you can't help to write songs with any meaning in them. I know I'm gonna get death threats for this, but I know that Pearl Jam learned everything they know from Nirvana. One more thing: why must everyone use such bad english? Do you guys spell words wrong and put capitals in incorrect places just for the hell of it? Stop! It's stupid.

yes the 80's alternative movement was good w/ bands like The Replacements/Husker Du/Depeche Mode/tHE cURE/thE pIXIES/rem/,BUT PLEASE COME ON IT CAN NOT TOUCH THE EARLY TO MID 90'S ALTERNATIVE MOVEMENT.with the likes of Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Soundgarden/Smashing P's/Tool/AiC/StP/Toadies/Toad and the Wet sprocket/NIN/and even REM made their best album in my opinoin in 1994 w/ "monster".... too many good bands in the early 90's

Yes, I must admit that Nirvana is one of my all-time fav bands, but this is not a simple NIRVANA RULES YOU SUCK post. Many people rant that Kurt couldn't play guitar. I think that is coming from shred guitarists. With the exception of Satriani, Vai, E.Johnson, and a few others, most of that speed guitar stuff sounds like scale exercises for GIT students. Kurt's genius was in writing SONGS, using the skills he had to construct killer riffs and great hooks that lived inside your head. And the topper- excellent lyrics that any Joe could relate to, above and beyond the usual "look how much pu**y I'm gettin" or "wah, she broke my poor little heart" pop crap. Kurt's "little tribe" from Washington single-handedly sent the likes of Winger and Warrant back to well-deserved obscurity, and ushered in a glorious (if unfortunately brief) period of honest music getting mainstream attention (Pearl Jam, STP, AIC, Soundgarden, etc). Have no fear - NSYNC and Britney will fade away just as their ancestors NewKids and Debbie Gibson did before them. It's been almost 8 years since Kurt was taken from us (I don't know if Courtney's to blame, but look at the facts- Kurt did not kill himself)and yet his music lives on and inspires young musicians still. (For people who only know "Teen Spirit" I recommend "Bleach" - in my opinion their best CD. LONG LIVE NIRVANA!!!

Nirvana may not suck, but they're definitely the most overrated band ever. They can't even touch the great bands of earlier decade that they're put on the same plateau with. And as for Alternative music, it was a particular movement that began in the 80's with groups like Depeche Mode and the Cure, and has NOTHING to do with Nirvana at all.
