Cinder
Review by Dan Grote

Cinder -  Break Your Silence
Label: Geffen
Rating:
Release Date: Feb 4, 2003

A (fictional) scene from the studio during the recording of Cinder’s major label debut, Break Your Silence, produced by Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland:

Scott: Hey guys, this album is really coming together, but you know what would be really cool? If you made your album sound like a mediocre version of Core.

End Scene

And so it is that Scott Weiland, who, when left to his own devices and a huge bag of heroin, unleashed one of the oddest, un-rock and roll albums of 1998, has now sicked Cinder upon the world. The band’s first LP reads like the Purple follow-up many early STP fans had been clamoring for, with its ‘90s throwback sound.

“Soul Creation,” the album’s first song, plays like an invitation to travel back in time ten years or so, when their producer’s band was first accused of sounding derivative (in the words of David Spade: “I liked this band the first time I heard them… when they were called Pearl Jam”). The grunge nostalgia wave hits full force on “Crutch” which dares to mix Korn’s guitar stutter and guttural growling with Layne Staley’s whining drawl.
Weiland himself does guest vocal duties on “Lush,” which certainly doesn’t help the band’s plea for respect, if they do in fact want respect.

Cinder try though, and they try the hardest not on the grunge retreads, but on the ballads, namely “She Said,” about a woman whose love for her boyfriend has died, and “Daddy,” which is of course about abandonment (what band doesn’t have abandonment issues these days?).

The biggest affront to decency on this album, however, may be “Consuela,” which is the lamest ode-to-a-girl song since the last ode-to-a-girl song (which was probably “Adrienne” by the Calling), a once proud genre that gave us Buddy Holly’s “Peggy Sue” but was destroyed some time in the mid-eighties by Steve Perry’s “Oh Sherry.”

VERDICT: Break Your Silence is as plain as the CD case the promo was delivered to me in. While its fourth-hand grunge is still better than much of the watered-down middle-of-the-road that’s taken over VH-1, there’s nothing better than the real thing. If anything, the album teaches a very important lesson: just because you idolize a rock singer, that doesn’t mean he’ll be a good producer.

i have followed and befriended these guys since the 90's when they were called "Soapy Tuna" then "Jesus Gun" and they still rock! Kenny is a great songwriter and Roger can sing with the best of them. I hope the critics of Scott W. will take the band for who THEY are. THEY are not STP, they are CINDER and they are great no matter who produces. Kenny and Roger, I will remain your "Reef" to stardom fan!

Posted by fillps:
Kenny's dad tought my uncle how to play guitar and i have "break your scilence". i would say that i could listen to that CD all day long. It is one of the best Cd's ive heard in a while. KENNY rocks and so does all 4 of them.

Cinder are a fantastic band. After hearing Soul Creation for the first time, I immeidiately fell in love with these guys.... Love Cinder

Posted by STPFan:
This CD grew on me. No, not like a fungus. It was only after I decided I really liked it that I found out that it was produced by the singer from STP. Wierd coincidence to me. Anyway, give this excellent CD a listen.

Cinder is AWESOME!!!!Anybody who has heard the music and dislikes it, has a serious problem. These guys rocked at a concert I attended and they have what it takes to go a long way in this business. Keep up the good work guys, because you already have a solid fan base behind you!!!!

Posted by LithiumBliss:
True dat, Beth. They don't sound like just any every band out there. They are a unique blend of early STP and new Disturbed crap. As far as IPs go, I fess up to Debbie and Courtney, but I guess it's true - no one STILL can recognize sarcasm criticism. Carry on with the review bashing, Sarah, Kelly, Michelle, Andrea, Phoebe, etc., etc......

Posted by Phoenix:
hey aG, 2 different reasons for that - mIRC and FTP servers... For example, I got an advance copy of the Mad at Gravity (dont know how many here have heard of them) album through those at least 2-3 weeks prior to the albums release... I bought the CD cause I really liked it, but once one of the wrong hands gets on it... It's ALL over mIRC and the FTP's.

Posted by aG:
I'm curious about something. I'm sure Universal is going to have kittens when this CD comes out and no one buys it since EVERYONE seems to already have a copy a month before it came out. Stealing from the bands you love? I haven't heard this CD so I'll reserve judgement. But I do find it funny that so many people seem to have advances. No wonder the record industry claims their sales are down someone is giving away the store!

Posted by beth:
I Personally Love The New Cinder CD. I Got an advance copy from a friend. My favorite songs are "lush" and "daddy". Probably because they are unique and don't sound like every other band out there

Posted by admin:
contrary to the lies being told. No posts have been deleted from this section. But it is curious how many of the post come from the same IP.

Posted by Courtney:
Frig Cinder! I'm 100% not guilty, just like my man OJ. We've been cruising up and down Crack Street together, just looking for the real killers. Did I say f*ck Cinder?

Posted by Debbie:
Uh, I wonder how many different chick's names I can come up with in my air head to make the same post over and over. Dag, I might be giving Dan's opinion more cred if I don't stop it now. Like OMGZ!!!1

Posted by Cddragon:
The first time I heard this band, I was blown away! Nothing I have ever experienced compares to the rush of hearing Cinder live! They can move a crowd so well and even though I've never heard the entire CD, I can't wait to get my hands on it - because not only are "soul creation" and "she said" totally amazing songs, but I've met Roger, Pat, and Kenny (online) and I can tell you they are totally sweet and down to earth! Cinder rocks!!

Posted by Lindsay:
It is obvious you have a problem with Scott Weiland, but don't let that affect your view on CINDER, all I have to say is, CINDER ROCKS

Posted by Sally:
Wish this guy could get the facts straight! Leave Scott out of the review, is this band not called "CINDER"? Hello Dan Grote, did you listen to the cd? Some how I don't think you did, it really rocks. They have great stage presence. I will be buying the new cd

Posted by Kat:
I have known the guys from Cinder for years ;) and I have to say that they are a new sound out there but a great sound! They have lots of energy and love for their fans. How many other bands get online and chat with their fans.... As I have a copy of the CD I recommend it to everyone. They are an awesome ROCK band.

Posted by casey43:
I love Cinder and personally I think that they are one of the best new bands! I have heard their whole cd and it rocks. All of their songs don't sound the same, like most bands. They are very diverse and are incredibly talented. I know that I will be buying this cd as soon as it is released and everyone else should also. I promise you won't be disappointed!!

Posted by Kelly:
First time I seen these guys in concert with Sevendust a couple months ago I am eagerly awaiting to buy the CD! You should too!! They rawk live!!!!

Posted by michele11:
I saw Cinder live in Oct. All I can say is they rock!!! I've heard parts of the new CD and will be buying it as soon as it's released. I must disagree with the reviewer on this one. I hope everyone will give it a listen. Cinder will rock your world.

Posted by Tjvanaken:
As another huge fan of Cinder that currently holds and plays their new CD to be released all the time, I would like to say that it IS very good! I have also seen them in concert with Sevendust and 30 Seconds to Mars and they really made the audience come alive when they went on stage! Please do not let one person's bias against the album's producer make you miss out on a great album and some great music! Check it out for yourselves and write your own review on the music. Roger, Pat, Kenny, and Brian are very talented musicians. They blew us away with their personalities and their charisma. They will blow you away as well!

Posted by TIdbleGGR:
Contrary to the review author's beliefs...Cinder's music is entirely rock and Roger Young, the lead singer posesses a great talent the author is obviously envious of. Scott W. noticed that talent, as did oh, maybe GEFFEN records!? The other members of this phenomenal band, Pat, Kenny & Brian are equally talented and come to the world at this moment in time with music that is both cutting edge and holds some ballads that are mainstream enough for the masses. Believe me, these guys can rock...and they do. Check out the album and a show if they come to your area. RIGHT!

Posted by Lizzy:
I think you are way off base with your review. I was given a copy of Break Your Silence by Pat Maguire, (onthe bass, RIGHT,RIGHT)and I think it appeals to many different audiences.Throught the cd you can hear the talent that every one of them have, Kenny is an awsome gituarist, Brian on the drums - WOW, Roger's voice is incredible and Pat rocks. I have been watching these guys play since 1997 and they have a strong stage presence. These guys are rising stars, you just wait and see!

Posted by Amy:
I think the review is way off. After hearing Cinder live two times, I know I won't be dissapointed in the album. "Soul Creation" and "Ugly" are great to rock out to. And "She said" is beautiful. I hope no one lets this review skew their vision of a really great band.

Posted by MissYuck:
i've seen these guys play several times, and i have a copy of their upcoming album. let me just say-- they rock!! and "consuela" is one of the coolest songs. this is a CD that can be listened to from beginning to end-- no need to skip any tracks. don't let some lame review stop you from buying this great CD.

Posted by VampireRyan:
Meh. M-E-H, meh. Saw these guys open for Sevendust at the 9:30 club and they were okay. Guess I won't be getting this cd judging from what the review says. I'll just continue to listen to Audioslave and Coldplay.
