Day in Pop Report for 08/03/2010

Justin Bieber 3D- Lindsay Lohan Out of Jail- Lady Gaga Cocaine- Susan Boyle and Paul McCartney Glee- Charlie Sheen Sentenced To Rehab- New Britney Soon?- more
The Day in Pop Digest for 8/3: Antiquiet seems to feel this is a bit premature: 16 year old pop phenom Justin Bieber is not only penning his memoirs, we sh*t you not, but Paramount pictures will be turning his life story into a 3D feature biopic movie. more. Of course, you can't blame them for striking while the iron is hot and cashing in before he turns into Shawn Cassidy. Then again, a memoir by someone who doesn't even look like he has started puberty is a bit much and an obvious cash-in.

What do one hit wonders do after they run out of reality TV shows? Redlasso gives us a hint with this clip titled "Vanilla Ice Jumps Car Through Fire Into a Pond" here

(Jam!) Lady Gaga has urged fans not to follow in her footsteps and take drugs, after confessing she is still an "occasional" cocaine user more

(BBC) Lindsay Lohan is released from jail after serving less than two weeks of a 90-day sentence. Lohan, 24, had entered an all-female jail in Los Angeles on 20 July after violating her probation on a 2007 drunk-driving charge. more

(Yahoo) Susan Boyle and the music of Paul McCartney are to be featured in the new season of TV musical comedy "Glee" -- joining a growing list of performers eager to be associated with the hit show. more

(ASB) Producer Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins has just made fans of Britney Spears curious. Darkchild hinted in a online session held over the weekend that the pop star will release a new material in the near future, saying "Britney fans are gonna be so happy in few weeks." more

(BBC) Charlie Sheen is given 30 days in a rehabilitation centre after pleading guilty to assault in a domestic abuse case. more

(ASB) Ahead of "Teenage Dream" U.S. release on August 24, Katy Perry brought forward two more fresh materials from the album. One is titled "Peacock" which she showcased live when performing at MTV World Stage in Malaysia, the other is called "Not Like the Movies" which she released on iTunes. more

(Hecklerspray) Alicia Keys has gone and got herself married to a man with a very, very silly name. Yep, Keys and Swizz Beatz tied the knot and apparently, it was a surprisingly humble affair (well, relatively - they didn't have sodden tuna mayo rolls and pineapple hedgehogs) more

(Jam!) U.S. jazz singer Al Jarreau was discharged from hospital in the French city of Marseille on Sunday after being treated for heart palpitations. more

(BBC) American screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz, whose credits included several James Bond films, dies from cancer at the age of 68. more

(ASB) A representative for faceless French dance music duo Daft Punk has confirmed new songs purporting to be the band's work for Disney's upcoming "Tron" remake are fakes. more

(ASB) Hulk Hogan's singer daughter Brooke Hogan is facing legal action from her former producers over allegations she failed to properly credit them for work completed for her 2009 album "The Redemption". more -

The Drums Offer Up Free MP3
The Drums are thrilled to share the new "Down By The Water" MP3. A true departure from earlier singles the band slows the tempo showing their versatility with this new track.

Stacked against the summer's dance-inducing releases, "Down By The Water" is a breath of fresh air. Paring the production down to a slow bass line, light percussion, and a distant synthesizer, the most pronounced instrument is Jonny Pierce's voice, which opens softly and elevates to a sharp croon.

The minimalist production however, does not negate the intensity of the lyrics. "Down By The Water" is a love song. "Everybody's gotta love someone, but I just want to love you dear… you've got to believe me when I say the words forever,"pleads Pierce. - Grab it here

Ben Weaver Sets October Album Release
Ben Weaver has announced an October 19th release date for Mirepoix & Smoke, Ben's seventh full length album and second release on Bloodshot Records.

The songs on Mirepoix & Smoke are barely accompanied by more than Weaver's guitar or banjo and his voice, lending the record a much more stripped-down sound than his previous works. The songs were all recorded live over the course of two days with emphasis placed squarely on the rawness of Weaver's performances. Engineered, mixed and co-produced by Neil Strauch (Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Margot and the Nuclear So and So's) alongside Weaver, "this record is about me, my story, who I am and how it all keeps evolving," Ben says. "This time my voice and the words were the most important consideration when it came time to making production decisions."

For Weaver this latest effort came from a somewhat unexpected series of life choices and experiences. In the spring of 2009 Weaver decided to take some time away from touring to pursue his interest in food and cooking. It was while working as a prep cook at a farm-to-table restaurant in Minneapolis that the songs on Mirepoix and Smoke started to take shape. "Eventually the good songs started to come," says Weaver. "Ones that felt real, had their own legs. They came like all good things do: when I ceased looking. Connected to my surroundings, my past, my life, for what it all was, without romanticizing what I thought it should or could be." - more on this story

Quazedelic To Deliver AnuthaWorld in October Featuring Snoop Dogg
Long Beach bred producer and performer Quazedelic is excited to announce the release of his debut LP Stan Sly: AnuthaWorld.

Featuring guest spots from Snoop Dogg, and others, Stan Sly: AnothaWorld will be released October 5, 2010 on Georgia Anne Muldrow and Declaime's fast rising label, SomeOthaShip Connect.

The album, produced entirely by Quaze and the result of a decade's worth of work, is a synthesis of sound and soul that harnesses the essence of funk with modern day trappings. A hybrid of George Clinton-esque syncopated grooves and Doggystyle bravado, Stan Sly: AnothaWorld delivers the writings of a new chapter in the saga of funk and soul. On the concept of Stan Sly, Quazedelic explains it as a holy matrimony between fantasy and reality. "I find inspiration in the chaos going on in my life. It takes something almost tragic to create some of my deepest songs," says Quaze, continuing, "I then go back to bridge the gap between serious real life songs with fantasy funk tracks. Like polarity, without one another it couldn't exist." - more on this story

Amanda Palmer Starring in Cabaret
Amanda Palmer is making her next move...to the stage. Palmer will be teaming up with the prestigious The American Repertory Theater (who, in 2006, also presented The Dresden Dolls theatrical journey "The Onion Cellar" to rave reviews) and her beloved High School drama teacher and artistic mentor, Steven Bogart, with whom she recently co-created (along with a cast of 20 drama students from Lexington High School) the Neutral Milk Hotel and Anne frank-inspired original play "With the Needle That Sings in Her Heart" for a special production of "Cabaret".

"This production has been ten years in the making - an ongoing fantasy I've had in the back of my mind", says Palmer. "I've wanted to collaborate on 'Cabaret' with Bogart ever since I helped him with make-up & dialogue during his 2001 production of the show at Lexington High School. I was so inspired by his version of the show that I yearned for it to reach a wider audience - Bogart is truly a hidden gem of a director. Having worked with lots of directors now, I've come to realize how special and brazen he is in terms of the artistic risks he'll take."

"Cabaret", a musical based on Christopher Isherwood's "Berlin Stories", is set in the seedy Kit Kat Klub nightclub in Berlin in 1931, and follows the Nazi rise to power against the backdrop of Weimar decadence. Palmer will be playing the role of the Emcee/Master of Ceremonies. - more on this story

EOTO, MiMOSA and MartyParty Tour
EOTO, MiMOSA and MartyParty are teaming up for an 11 day tour next month. Here is the announcement:

The west coast is about to experience its first bass driven earthquake as three of the nation's top live electro, dubstep and glitch and producers join together for their first combined tour. The 11-day circuit will kick off this September in San Diego and will make its way up the coast featuring electronica artists EOTO, MiMOSA and MartyParty. Listeners can expect to be transported into another space and time with the sound and fury of the most respected dance music produced live on the scene today.

Electronica music does not have humble roots. Since its inception, the driving beats have moved bodies with a tribal-like abandon; inspiring colorful dance parties with almost a trance-like effect. New technologies have given birth to entire genres of musical sub-cultures - though none have seen such significant growth as the DubStep and Glitch categories are experiencing today. Built on unusual time signatures, clipped segments of samples and occasional vocals the genre favors dark, experimental themes laced with break beats and heavy bass. - more on this story
