Five Times August Week: Better With You
antiMusic reports: If there is one thing we love here at antiMusic it is when an artist finds success on their own. There is no better example of this than Brad Skistimas, better known as Five Times August, who not only turned down major label deals to stay indie but does everything on his own from his website to CD art and more important: marketing. He seems to have the Midas touch as he has logged over 100,000 in sales at online digital stores like iTunes, placed nine songs from his album on television shows like MTV's "Laguna Beach," the CW's "One Tree Hill," etc. And he has become the very first unsigned artist to have a CD carried by retail giant Wal-Mart. Talk about bucking the odds. So this week we asked Brad to pick five of favorite songs from the "Independent" album and tell us a little bit about them to maybe gain an insight into how he is succeeding all on his own.

Here is Brad to tell us about "Better With You": The night I finished this song I knew my style as a songwriter was starting to figure itself out. I wrote it in October of 2003, and though the song is already 4 years old, it's continued to be a faithful song to my career. It has been placed on four different television shows and I'm amazed at it's 'underground' success. I actually didn't write it for anyone in particular, just with the hope of finding the perfect relationship. I think that's why so many people relate to it. I think everybody wants that kind of love. Some people have it, and some people are hoping for it. Others had it, lost it, and now they're playing the song to their ex trying to win them back!- Have a listen for yourself and if you like what you hear, support true Indie music by picking up the Five Times August CD or buying the download!

50 Cent Promises To Retire
antiMusic reports: 50 Cent has made the world a deal we simply can't refuse! Half a buck says that if Kanye West's new CD sells more than his then he will take his ball and go home. So we finally have a legitimate reason to buy a Kanye album.

Both rappers will commemorate the brutal terrorist attacks on the US this September 11th by dropping their new albums on the public. In the past, Fiddy has logged more sales than Kanye, who was once pictured as Jesus on the cover of Rolling Stone, but some are predicting that the new CD "Graduation" from the biggest ego in popular music (a.k.a. Kanye) may just outsell pocket change's CD "Curtis". So Fiddy laid it all on the line and promises to quit his solo career if Kanye's "Graduation" sends him back to the 1st grade.- see what loose change had to say

NIN The TV Show
antiMusic reports: Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor has plans to turn the band's negative utopia concept album 'Year Zero,' into a TV show. A show would be the final piece of the elaborate puzzle that has been centered around the album.

Reznor tells a UK paper that plans for a TV series based on the album are moving forward. "We've got a producer on board and have met with writers," Reznor told the Sun. "We're about to pitch it to the network, so we're a couple of weeks away from meeting all of the main people, and we'll see what happens."- more on this story

Korn Kids Arrested Family Values Drinking
antiMusic reports: Nothing says family values more than underage drinking. Imagine the proud parents of the kids that went off to the Family Values Tour in New Jersey last week that were arrested for tossing a few back.

Police reportedly arrested 33 concert goers for underage drinking at the PNC Bank Arts Center concert in Holmdel, NJ last Wednesday night. Korn and Evanescence are headlining this year's Family Values outing and underage drinking wasn't the only family value on display at the NJ stop of the tour. - more kids got busted for other fun stuff

Barker was riding through Townsville, Australia around a quarter after 8 in the morning Friday when he heard a woman calling for help down an embankment to Ross Creek. He and another man pulled the victim out of the water but by then it was too late to save him, according to a report by Contact Music. - Barker explains what happened

Aretha Can't Take the Heat
antiMusic reports: Aretha Franklin disappointed Motown fans on Sunday because she couldn't take the heat. The famed singer called off her hometown concert due to concerns over east coast weather that has caused her recent shows in the region to be "sweltering and all but overwhelming."

On Friday Franklin announced that she was pulling the plug on her Sunday night concert at the DTE Energy Music Theatre because of the east coast heat wave. In a statement she said "Following the Weather Channel and the daily reports in the news via television and newspaper publications, I see that the temperatures in Detroit have been very similar, [to the east coast locations of her recent concerts]" she said in the statement. "I am exhausted from the heat and cannot tolerate heat in these extremely high numbers and being in concert simultaneously."

Maybe she should have used the web for better info? At 4:00 PM local time the Weather Underground reported that it was 86 degrees in Motown and Clarkston, Michigan (where the amphitheatre is located). They also report that it was 108.4 in the Western Hills of Yucca Valley where antiMusic is headquartered. But as long as there is cold beer we won't let a little thing like the heat stop us. Ok, the air conditioner helps too and the beer explains the typos.- comments? Beer money donations?

How Crap Bands Get Major Labels Deals
antiMusic reports: A rather disturbing message was posted to Punkbands over the weekend. The message was an open call for college interns to man the label's A&R department. Yes, A&R is now apparently in the hands of interns instead of seasoned musicians which really does explain so much of current music! We figure that the originator of said message may have failed middle school geometry due to the fact that they think Los Angeles and San Francisco are in the same region as well as Portland and Seattle (though 175 miles is pretty close in comparison to the 400 miles that separate LA and SF). We have no idea if this is legit or not since they use a "free email" account but here is the message:

Mercury Records is currently seeking A&R interns for the upcoming Fall 2007 semester. Interns will partake in a variety of activities including new music research, talent scouting, and attending local showcases. Candidates must possess good communication skills and have the ability to attend local shows. This is a hands-on internship and a great stepping-stone into the music industry. Only eager candidates need apply, as this is a highly competitive internship.- more on this story

Schenker Rehab Intervention
antiMusic reports: It appears that members of the Michael Schenker Group pulled an intervention on that band's namesake according to the group's drummer who also alluded that the famed guitarist is in rehab. Thus explaining the recent tour cancellation half way through a concert.

MSG drummer Bodo Schopf took to his website to explain why the band had to pull out of their UK tour in the middle of a gig. He writes: "First I want to thank everybody for coming to see us and giving us the support. Sorry that we couldn't give you the 100% but those who were there saw that a man who plays from his heart was really hurt in his heart. We and some really close friends took care of him, and he is now in good hands, where he gets a really good treatment. Thank you again for your support."- more on this story

Universal Buys V2 and Goes DRM Free
antiMusic reports: Universal Music Group will soon be the owner of V2. And in another big move by the label group, they have jumped on the DRM-free bandwagon and will begin offering up unrestricted music files on a host of online music services beginning August 21st. However, don't look to find these unprotected downloads on iTunes.

UMG will be testing the idea of selling unrestricted music via Rhapsody, Pure Tracks, Amazon.com, Best Buy and Walmart, according to Filter. Fans find these formats appealing because they can easily be used on various MP3 players without having to bypass the dreaded DRM. According to the Filter report "The DRM-free MP3s will remain the same cost and will be available until January 2008." What they do after that is anyone's guess. - more on this story

Tony Wilson RIP
Filter reports: Sad news today as Factory Records founder and Manchester hero Tony Wilson passed away at 57. The Salford-born Wilson - famous for discovering bands like the Happy Mondays and Joy Division - succumbed to cancer.

He was diagnosed with the disease in 2006 and subsequently underwent surgery and chemotherapy to stop it from spreading. When chemotherapy failed to beat the cancer, the drug Sutent was recommended, but the expensive treatment was unfortunately not covered by the NHS.

However, the Happy Mondays banded together with other Manchester musicians that Wilson had supported to start a fund to help pay for his treatment.- more on this story

Lily Allen TV
antiMusic reports: Lily Allen may be getting her own TV show next year if reports by the always reliable Sun are to be believed. Allen has reportedly been in talks with BBC3 about putting together a show.

Allen met with BBC3 boss Danny Cohen last week, according a NME report which also says, "A BBC source said that they would be working with Allen after she finishes recording her new album, which is scheduled to be completed by May next year."

Gigwise gives us a little clue into what one possible Allen show may be- about
