Evanescence Members Hire American Idol Singer
Spin.com reports: Old band, new singer: It's potentially a recipe for disaster -- just ask the boys in defunct groups like Velvet Revolver and Audioslave.

But three former members of goth rock stars Evanescence, all booted from the group over the years by frontwoman Amy Lee, are joining forces for a new band -- and they've tapped American Idol finalist Carly Smithson to contribute lead vocals.

Dublin-born Smithson, who finished sixth in the 2008 season of American Idol, joins ex-Evanescence guitarist/songwriter Ben Moody, guitarist John Lecompt, and drummer Rocky Gray in their new band, the Fallen - more on this story

Heaven & Hell Injury
Blabbermouth reports: According to Sergi Ramos of The Metal Circus, Heaven & Hell was forced to cancel its appearance Sunday night (June 21) at the Metalway Festival in Zaragoza, Spain due to back pain suffered by guitarist Tony Iommi.

Ramos tells Blabbermouth.Net, "The stage was already set with all [Heaven & Hell's] gear and backline, and after a 45-minute delay in the showstart, an ambulance was called to the backstage area and the techs started dismantling their stage gear. There was a big confusion for about half an hour, and afterwards a member of the organization [came up on stage and] explained what happened to Tony, telling [the crowd] that the show wasn't cancelled yet [and] that a doctor was trying to determine whether he could go on or not.

"After a few minutes, while the next band [Saxon] was setting up their stage gear, Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice appeared on stage to adressed the issue in front of the crowd. Ronnie kneeled on stage as if to say 'sorry' and proceeded to tell the crowd that the show could not go on due to Tony's back problem and that they would make it up at another time and place when it's possible."

Mother Owes $1.92 Million For Downloading Songs
MusicRadar reports: Songs that would cost most people just 99 cents each could soak a Minnestota mother of four out of $1.92 million. Yes, you read correctly. In the second file-sharing copyright-infringement trial against Jammie Thomas-Rasset, a Minnesota jury ruled that she owes $1.92 million to the four major labels after illegally downloading and sharing 24 songs.

The whopping amount comes out to a cost of $80,000 per track illegally shared, and the RIAA hopes this will finally put an end to illegal downloading. more

[in related news: Let the backlash begin. Billboard has an interesting article on how this might hurt the music business. "But a question arose after the verdict about whether the sheer size of the damages could lead to a backlash against an industry that is already portrayed in some quarters as overreaching. Sony BMG attorney Wade Leak, who testified at the trial, said he was 'shocked' by the damages award." - Read the Billboard report

Blink-182 Tease Fans With Nail Salon Tour Date
MTV reports: It seemed too good (or bizarre) to be true, though with Blink-182 you never can be sure. Did Blink-182 schedule a one-off gig at a Cleveland nail salon?

That's what it said on the tour page of the band's Interscope Records site, which — for reasons not clear to anyone — showed the guys appearing at Alice's International Salon & Spa on July 10, nearly two weeks before their tour was officially scheduled to kick off in Las Vegas.

Obviously, this got Blink fans buzzing. Imagine catching Mark, Tom and Travis while luxuriating in a seaweed hydration wrap, or getting a French mani-pedi! And doing it all in beautiful Cleveland! - Sadly, it turns out the spa date wasn't legit.

Fear Factory Comeback Show and Tour Called Off?
Blabbermouth reports: The much-anticipated debut performance by the new band calling itself Fear Factory — featuring original FF members Dino Cazares (guitar) and Burton C. Bell (vocals) alongside bassist Byron Stroud (who played on the last two Fear Factory albums in addition to touring and recording with Strapping Young Lad and Zimmers Hole) and legendary drummer Gene Hoglan (Dethklok, Strapping Young Lad, Dark Angel, Death, Testament) — which was scheduled to take place earlier tonight (Sunday, June 21) at the Metalway Festival in Zaragoza, Spain was cancelled at the last minute, reportedly due to legal issues surrounding the use of the Fear Factory name.

Update: According to concert promoter Marek Lieberberg Konzertagentur GmbH & Co.KG, Fear Factory's entire German tour — which was supposed to take place between August 3 and August 12 — has been called off.

In a June 14, 2009 appearance on the nationally syndicated radio program "Speed Freaks", FEAR FACTORY drummer Raymond Herrera stated about the band's current status, "[Guitarist Christian Olde Wolbers and I] actually still in FEAR FACTORY. There's a big legal battle going on right now. - more on this story

Two Cow Garage Hitting The Road
PR reports: Two Cow Garage are celebrating the release of their fourth full-length, "Speaking In Cursive", on Suburban Home Records, and are touring this summer and fall in support of the album.

Comprised of Micah Schnabel (vocals, guitar), Shane Sweeney (bass, vocals), Chris Flint (guitar), Andy Schell (keyboards), and Cody Smith (drums), the outfit, which plays more than 200 shows a year (and has for the past six years), has made their darkest, yet most rewarding record to date, writing songs that deal with the problems and dilemmas of growing up, coming to terms with ones dreams versus reality, as well as songs about substance abuse, the wasting of youth (and the effects on your friends when youth is stolen too soon), navigating the troubled waters of relationships, and, of course, crushes-turned-heartbreak.

With "Speaking in Cursive", Two Cow Garage has brought on a permanent keyboard player with Andy Schell, helping the band expand on their guitar-bass-drum assault, adding depth and richer melodies to the heartbreak-on-the-sleeve lyrical bite and rock attack that Two Cow Garage is already known for. - more on this story
