Dio Fighting Cancer
(antiMusic) We learned the sad news that metal legend Ronnie James Dio is battling cancer after the Day in Rock was published before the Thanksgiving break. If you missed that report, here it is again. While it is disturbing news Dio's wife and manager, Wendy Dio, says that the cancer is in the early stages and she seems optimistic about his recovery. She posted the following update on the Dio website on Wednesday:

"Ronnie has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer. We are starting treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic. After he kills this dragon, Ronnie will be back on stage, where he belongs, doing what he loves best, performing for his fans.

"Thanks to all the friends and fans around the world that have sent well wishes. This has really helped to keep his spirit up. Long Live Rock and Roll, Long Live Ronnie James Dio" - Dio Website

Guns N' Roses Going South
(antiMusic) South American heavy rock fans are looking at a great 2010 with two heavy weight bands planning tours on their continent. A few weeks ago Metallica announced their plans to head south and now their former co-headlining touring partners, Guns N' Roses, have announced plans to play there too. And no they are not touring together.

The official Guns N' Roses myspace was updated on Thanksgiving Day with news that the band were planning a South American tour that will kick off on March 10th and run for a month, ending on April 10th. Dates have not yet been announced.

There is hope for U.S. too. In the same Myspace posting, the band reminds fans that they are planning to tour Canada this January, with a run ending on February 4th. This leaves a month long window open for them to play some U.S. dates but that is pure speculation at this point. - more on this story

Born Again: Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi Collaborate On New Song
(antiMusic) After Ronnie James Dio left Black Sabbath to form his solo band, his Sabbath bandmates recruited legendary Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan to front the group. That incarnation of Black Sabbath only produced one album, 1983's criminally underrated "Born Again".

The relationship between Gillan and Iommi was said to be strained with Gillan reportedly saying that he felt like "hired help" in the band. After the 1984 Born Again tour, Gillan left Sabbath to reunite with Deep Purple.

Fast forward twenty five years and Gillan recently told a Swedish magazine that he and Iommi finished writing a song together right before they both headed to Armenia to be honored by their prime minister. Gillan says they are thinking of putting together a charity band with a few other musicians.

BW&BK has a report on the honor, plus they translated the part of the interview dealing with this collaboration, - check it out here

Metallica Expand Tour Plans
(antiMusic) Metallica have released even more 2010 tour dates. While so far it's been great news for parts of Europe and America's southern neighbors, there is still no signs that they'll play their homeland in 2010. But the dates keep rolling in, so there is still hope. Here is what the band had to say, plus their tour plans as they stand now:

We're really excited for today's installment of "where are they going now" as we tell you about four shows coming up in cities we have never played in!! The March leg of the World Magnetic tour kicks off on March 1 in Guadalajara, Mexico (which, btw, we were honored to visit as part of the MTV Latin American Music Awards), heads to Monterrey, Mexico on March 3, and then over to Guatemala City, Guatemala on March 5.

We will close out this leg of the tour in San Juan, Puerto Rico on March 14, where we technically have BEEN before, but two or three of you may remember that unfortunately the show scheduled in 1993 was rained out. - more on this story

Ultra Rare Slash Les Paul On eBay?
Sleazeroxx is reporting that one of the four extremely rare custom made Gibson Les Paul's that were made for Slash is now up for auction on eBay. Here is part of their report:

This flaming red beauty is one of four Les Pauls made for Guns N'Roses and Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash by J.T. Riboloff of the Gibson Custom Shop. Slash ordered the guitar and its three mates after attending a NAMM show and seeing a slim-necked '59 replica that Riboloff made for guitarist/Marshall amplifier artist rep. Richie Fliegler. The all-black hardware and screaming yellow binding were Slash's ideas. The tuning machines are specially made black chrome Schaller M6's with Kluson-style buttons.

Other personalized features include Dunlop 6100 jumbo frets and a "stripped" look - no pickup covers or pickguard - that shows off the guitar's figured Western maple top. Considerable hand-antiquing went into areas like the binding, says J.T. "I even put the old holly veneer on the headstock - like Gibson used to use in the old days." Of the four Les Pauls Riboloff made for Slash, three are still in his possession. The fourth, the one being auctioned, he traded for another guitar in the Gibson vault. - more on this story

Singled Out: Steve Conte (New York Dolls Solo Album)
(antiMusic) Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Steve Conte of the New York Dolls tells us about the song "Gypsy Cab," from his new solo album Steve Conte & The Crazy Truth. We now turn it over to Steve for the story!

The music for "Gypsy Cab" from the album Steve Conte & The Crazy Truth was written in my sleep on a flight to Japan w/ New York Dolls. I was sitting across from Sylvain and I told him that I had just dreamed a great riff for a new song. I had no recording device so I used my own musical hieroglyphs & wrote it down on an airplane vomit bag. A year later when I was writing for my album I found the vomit bag in a pile of papers and finished the song.

At first I was singing a Chuck Berry lyric along with the song's main riff ("Sweet little rock and roller...") and considered making it about a young girl that was in love with Arthur Kane - but then I decided to keep it about myself. Like they say, "write what you know". It's about my former life...being out in the streets till the sun came up. I used to get off on the risk & danger of being places I shouldn't be, doing things I shouldn't be doing. It was like playing Russian roulette. The thing is, in this song I didn't want to glorify addictions the way some cats do, romancing memories of the good old days with their drug of choice. I wanted to talk about the insanity of it, admitting it, getting through it and being able to have a real life after. I'm not necessarily Mr. Clean now, but I'm much better than I was.

I'll be making a video for it next month...on location...like the songs says, "Way up in Harlem...."

The album hits stores in the UK this week, just in time for the kick off of the New York Dolls tour! You can preview Steve's new album and learn more about it, plus the tour plans - right here!
