Billboard had an interesting article that puts the decline in music profits in perspective. Here is part of it: Comparing the late 2000s to the late 1990s incongruently matches an industry between product cycles (the decline of CD and the rise of digital) to an industry at the apex of the CD's product cycle. Even though the late '90s was the high point for recorded music revenue, it was an aberration. The CD was an unusually successful format the likes of which will not be seen again soon. more

Mike Patton Talks Faith No More Reunion Tour, Lady Gaga Cover
MetalSucks' Gary Suarez recently spoke with Faith No More frontman Mike Patton, whose collection of Italian language cover songs (recorded with a 40-piece orchestra) "Monda Cane" comes out on Tuesday, May 4th. Patton spoke about "Mondo Cane," Fantomas, Tomahawk, the events that led to the Faith No More reunion and whether or not he ever plans to release new Faith No More music. An excerpt follows

How have these reunion shows been for you? Have they been enjoyable for you? Yeah. Of course. I'm not in the business of suffering. I'm not gonna put myself out there and torture myself. I'm just not gonna do it. It feels good. It feels comfortable. In a way, we're sort of… we're revisiting the past but we're also healing some old wounds. We didn't break up under the best of circumstances and this is sort of a chance to get that right. Anyone in their life, if they have a chance to sorta go back to a certain snapshot in their life, and maybe do something different… I think that's what we're doing right now.

With these live shows, whose idea was it to include Peaches & Herb and Lady GaGa covers into the set? [laughs] I don't wanna take complete credit, but… Look, it's something that happens. It's not something where we sat down and said, "Hey, let's do a Lady GaGa cover over one of our tunes." It just kinda happens. A lot of that is my responsibility. We played a certain set of music for a long period of time, and it's only natural to get a little complacent. So, to me, what's fun is injecting other people's tunes over the top of our tunes. I guess it's a live mash-up, if you will. - Read the full interview

Singled Out: At The Soundawn
Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today At The Soundawn guitarist Andrea Violante tells us about "Caofedian" from their brand new album "Shifting". We now turn it over to Andrea for the story:

'Caofedian' is the heart of 'Shifting'. Or at least to me it is, since I consider this song as the most complete and essential at the same time. The title comes from a metropolis projected by Chinese government intended to be the third millennium city, green and self-sufficient thanx to a so-called "energy tower" placed in the heart of the town and capable of producing energy from wind, sun and water. The project is pretty fascinating but the idea behind it is quite unsettling. It's the same old story of challenging nature and human limits, to go on and on and on at any cost.

This is what the lyrics are about, reporting the story of a man building the highest tower ever (something like Babel also). The most he's climbing high, the less oxygen he can breathe in. However, blinded by his aim, he keeps on going until he blacks out. At this point his instinct forces him to flop down. During the fall he keeps repeating himself: "So far, so good. So far, so good".

The music follow this flow, starting from very far and low echoes and slowly building up the whole orchestration. It's a constant crescendo that finally explodes with huge walls of guitars and tight drumming. That's what I truly love in the song, the fact that music and lyrics are strongly connected.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album - right here!

Krokus Return
For over 2 decades Krokus has been one of rocks most triumphant exports
and now the band's most victorious line-up are back with the release of Hoodoo, to drop in the states on May 25.

In 2008, the band celebrated an astonishing comeback with a reunion concert in Berne's Stade de Suisse where over 10,000 supporters showed up. Axel Rudi Pell Sets US Release
In times of restless reorientation and a permanent hectic search for ever more spectacular innovations, Axel Rudi Pell has proved to be a constant, solid as a rock, a reliable preserver of his undisputed assets. Confident and courageous at the same time, he has embarked on a consistently traditional course with his band, relying more than ever on traditional values with his new album, The Crest, which will be released in the US on June 1st.

"The Crest sounds absolutely typical of me and my band. In a way, the new tracks mark a return to our roots. And I'm proud to say that there isn't one double bass number on The Crest," comments PELL. The guitarist and songwriter knows that this decision will not be considered archaic, but makes him one of the spearheads of a thoroughly contemporary development.

His 13th studio album is sure to impress with varied compositions at the interface of melodic metal and hard rock. The collaboration between PELL and his American vocalist, Johnny Gioeli, which was established some twelve years ago, has experienced yet another magic moment on The Crest. The American's raw, charismatic voice is a perfect complement to the deeply melodic numbers by the AXEL RUDI PELL BAND, who in turn set the stage perfectly for their front man. "Naturally, I came up with the main features of the melody and lyrics, but I'd be ill advised if I didn't listen to Johnny's suggestions", says PELL, "there's real teamwork in our band." - more on this story

Coliseum Go Blind In One Eye
A song written in a room where someone committed suicide, recorded in a funeral home, on an album titled after a horror film, and centered around the struggle to resist the darkest desires of the human psyche should have the marks of doom and gloom, not the sound of a musical rebirth.

Not if the song in question was penned by Coliseum. The Louisville, Kentucky-based trio has always done things according to its gut instinct, not by others' expectations.

"Blind In One Eye," the first track written for the band's third and latest album, House With a Curse (Temporary Residence 6-22-10), cements a new beginning for the band, one that takes cues from the sounds and ethos of the band's early-era Dischord and Touch and Go musical roots, and pushes the boundaries of conventional rock and punk. - more on this story

Gwar's Crack-A-Thon A Complete Disaster
After a week and a half of utter silence (and even less interest) GWAR's much-touted "Crack-a-Thon 2010" was today revealed to be a "complete disaster", doing nothing to alleviate lead singer's Oderus Urungus' crack debt, which grew to four times its pre-Crack-a-Thon size. The MF Gallery, which hosted the event, was left in flaming ruin, until a squad of evil dwarfs emerged from the rubble, rebuilding the structure overnight.

Despite stellar performances (Andrew WK, Kembra Phaler of The Voluptuos Horror of Karen Black), compelling interviews (Jamey Jasta, Mecronos of the band DETHRACE), and exceptional bartending (Balsac the Jaws of Death), the highly-anticipated fund-raising drive actually ended up "losing millions", according to Betty Fizzbin, Crack-a-Thon official and part-time rodeo animal. She continued--

"We actually made a ton of money...I mean the phones were ringing off the hooks, and cash was literally pouring into the box office! But then Oderus locked himself in the receipt booth and smoked it all up. He didn't even try to buy crack, he just smoked the money..." - more on this story

Maynard James Keenan Announces More Blood Into Wine Screenings
Blood Into Wine, the documentary that shares the story of Maynard James Keenan (front man for Tool, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle) and vineyard partner Eric Glomski's mission to bring notoriety and credibility to Northern Arizona's burgeoning wine industry, has added two additional New York City screenings: May 28 at City Winery NYC and May 29 at Uniondocs in Williamsburg (Brooklyn).

The previously announced date at City Winery NYC is May 27 and is accompanied by a Q&A featuring guests from the film. The May 28 screening will feature an assortment of wines from Keenan's vineyards.

City Winery is the brainchild of Michael Dorf, founder of the downtown music mecca the Knitting Factory, and comprises a music club and operational winery in the heart of Soho, NY. - more on this story
