Dream Theater Pick Their New Drummer
(Gibson) Dream Theater have found their new drummer to replace Mike Portnoy, who left the band earlier this year to pursue other musical avenues. But fans are going to have to wait a little while longer to find out who it is.

According to Blabbermouth.net, guitarist John Petrucci has updated fans with the following message: "Hey, everyone. Wanted to quickly let you all know what's been happening lately. I know that the big question is 'Who is the new Dream Theater drummer?' I also realize that some people are getting frustrated waiting for the news. Well, auditions went great and we do have someone but we are spending some time getting everything in order before making an official announcement. Let me just say that we are all incredibly excited about our choice and just bursting at the seams to let the world know!"

Petrucci goes on to say he's working on tunes for his next solo album as well as cataloguing riffs for the next Dream Theater album, which the band will start recording next month. - more on this story

Big Four 2011: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax Teaming Up Again
(Gibson) After delivering a run of acclaimed shows earlier this year, the "Big Four" will be back together in 2011. Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, the so-called "Big Four" of thrash metal, will headline the first night of next summer's U.K. Sonisphere Festival on July 8.

"As soon as the 'Big Four' gigs started rolling across Sonisphere festivals in Eastern Europe last summer, we all felt we were part of something special," Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said in a statement. "The vibe within the bands was more than anyone had anticipated and the vibe with the fans was so next level, it completely blew our minds... there was no way this should not happen again!!! So I am beyond psyched that the first 'Big Four' show in Western Europe will take place on the hallowed grounds of Knebworth, where so many unique and special gigs have happened over the years."

Members of the other bands also weighed in on the news. Slayer's Kerry King: "Always excited to do 'Big Four' shows. Now England is in line to be devastated by this heavy metal powerhouse!"

Megadeth's Dave Mustaine: "The 'Big Four' concerts are the most important, most exciting event to happen in the history of live concerts in our genre, and perhaps the entire music industry. I am glad to be a part of this enormous celebration of thrash, speed, and good ole heavy metal!"

Anthrax's Scott Ian: "Merry early Xmas present for us... more 'Big Four' shows!!! The shows we did together with our brothers in Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth were not only the high point of 2010, but also some of the best shows Anthrax have ever played. Getting to share this with our friends in the U.K. will be amazing." - more on this story

Metallica Were Unsure of Big 4 Success
Slayer frontman Tom Araya has revealed there were so few Big 4 shows because Metallica weren't sure the package would be successful.

Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax shared the same stage for the first time ever at Sonisphere festival across Europe during the summer. The show in Bulgaria was shown in cinemas worldwide and has now been released on DVD. But many fans in the US, UK and elsewhere were disappointed not to get the chance to see the Big 4 live for themselves.

"The shows were entirely scheduled and decided on by Metallica. It was their decision," Araya tells Noisecreep. "When it first came together a journalist asked James Hetfield about the tour, and he said Metallica weren't really sure about how well it would do, and they'd have to do a little bit more homework on it.

"I'm sitting there thinking, 'If you asked me that question I'd say let's do a worldwide tour.' - more on this story

Rare Hard Rock and Metal Pictures Go Online Including Randy Rhoads, AC/DC, Def Leppard and more
(Gibson) The period from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s was a golden age for fans of hard rock and heavy metal. Artists like Judas Priest, AC/DC, Def Leppard and Van Halen bestrode the Earth like leather-clad colossi. Stages were chock full of pyro and guitar was king. This was teenaged Jaime Zamora's world.

Jaime Zamora was a young metalhead in Corpus Christi, Texas. Zamora, who is now a four-time Emmy award-winning photojournalist, took his camera to see acts like Triumph and Ozzy Osbourne at the now-demolished Memorial Coliseum and fast-talked his way to the front of the stage for priceless pics of the era's greatest hard rock heroes. "Imagine seeing AC/DC or Van Halen for under ten bucks when these bands were young and hungry to make a mark. Unbelievable times," Zamora said. "Corpus Christi was a favorite stop for the young bands of the time. The crowds were large, loud and energetic, and the bands rewarded us with some amazing shows."

Though he didn't quite realize it at the time, Zamora was bearing witness to history, particularly when Ozzy came to town with his iconic young guitarist. "Randy Rhoads was so close I could touch him," Zamora said. "At the time I didn't realize the photos I took that night would become my most prized images." Rhoads died just three and a half weeks after the show. - Check em out and read more here

Megadeth Members of Nightmare For Hydrogyn
(Rock AAA) Hydrogyn singer Julie Westlake has revealed how a dream-come-true scenario of having two former Megadeth members in the band turned into a five-month nightmare.

And she says guitarist Jeff Young is still motivated by an obsession with Dave Mustaine – 21 years after the Megadeth mainman fired him. Earlier this year the Kentucky hard rock outfit hired Young, who provided guitar for the iconic 1988 thrash album So Far, So Good… So What!

He in turn brought in James LoMenzo, who'd been forced to leave Megadeth when original bassist David Ellefson rejoined. But four months after firing Young, Westlake says the attraction of having two big-name musicians on new album Judgment was mired by "arrogance" and "obsession". - She lets loose here

Death Cab For Cutie Talk New Album
(Gibson) Death Cab For Cutie say their new album, Codes and Keys, will be released in the spring of 2011. Frontman Ben Gibbard has likened the disc to the ambient expressionism of Brian Eno's Another Green World, but bassist Nick Harmer says the group hasn't dispensed with guitars altogether.

"There are definitely guitars on this record," Harmer told Stereogum, in a recent interview. "There are just less of them than before and we're using them in different ways this time. Ben was really inspired by writing on acoustic guitar and on a piano, so often those parts become voices or keyboard lines, rather than guitar parts. We really experimented with piecing the songs together in different ways and using the studio differently, so this a much less guitar-centric album than we've ever made before."
Harmer went on to say the new album is more radiant in spirit than the band's previous disc, 2008's Narrow Stairs. "The emotional spectrum feels much wider this time," he explained. "The last record was much darker and was much more closely connected to what Ben had been going through in his life at the time. I think there's a lot more light in this record."

OK Go's Latest Stunt
(Gibson) With the help of GPS, 150 fans and flashlights, OK Go recently created their latest music video stunt. Parading over an eight-mile stretch of Los Angeles, the quirky rockers spelled out OK Go, when seen from above on a GPS map. The footage, shot in November, was incorporated into a music video for "Back from Kathmandu," according to MTV.com.

"The idea is ... we are going to make one giant painting, essentially, with Los Angeles," said OK Go frontman Damian Kulash. "We are marching a loop that spells out 'OK Go' through Los Angeles. We're hoping when people see this, they'll think, 'That's a great idea. I'm going to get into my car and drive all over Southeast Asia and make the Mona Lisa!'"

The band is asking for fans to submit their own journeys, which will be edited into a future, collaborative music video. Wired offered some advice to those taking up the challenge: "Participants are advised to plan their journey carefully, keep a consistent pace and move slowly around corners to ensure the signal can keep up with you." - more on this story

No Show Opened Door For Motorhead's Lemmy
(Rock AAA) Motorhead hero Lemmy discovered his instrument by accident when a Hawkwind bassist failed to turn up for a gig. And he says it's a good thing too – because he was never very good on guitar.

In a video interview with The Quietus Lemmy explains: "I was mediocre at guitar. I couldn't play lead to save my life, or yours. I went for a job with Hawkwind as a guitar player but they didn't need one.

"The bass player didn't show up because it was a free gig, but like an idiot he left his bass in the gear van. It was like, 'Please steal my gig,' – so I stole his gig. - more on this story

Two More Jack White Produced Singles To Be Released
(Press Here) Folk-pop duo First Aid Kit and renowned psych-rockers Dungen are the latest artists to take part in Third Man Records' Blue Series of releases. The special series of 7-inch records, produced by Jack White and recorded at his own Third Man Studios in Nashville, has featured releases from Wanda Jackson, Laura Marling and Secret Sisters, amongst others.

Celebrated Swedish rock band Dungen recorded their Blue Series single at the Third Man Studios in September. The 4-piece, led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gustav Ejstes, recorded two brand new tracks for the label: a mesmeric psych-pop odyssey "Oga Nasa Mum" (which translates into English as "Eye Nose Mouth") and a haunting instrumental titled "Highway Wolf". Since 2004 Dungen have released a string of critically lauded albums. Their impressive sixth full length Skit i allt (Subliminal Sounds/ Mexican Summer) was released earlier this year.

For their Blue Series release First Aid Kit recorded spine-tingling covers of Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier" (made famous in 1965 by Donovan) and classic blues standard "It Hurts Me Too", a song much loved by fans of Karen Dalton's 1969 folk-blues version. First Aid Kit – comprised of 17 and 20-year old sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg - recorded the tracks in October during their US headlining tour with touring drummer Mattias Bergvist, their father Benkt Söderberg, Jack Lawrence (The Greenhornes/ The Raconteurs) and Joshua Hedley adding additional parts on "It Hurts Me Too". A Real Highway To Hell For Bon Scott
(Gibson) If fans get their way, a lane in the Melbourne suburb of Sunshine might soon be named after Bon Scott. The late AC/DC singer was a resident of Sunshine, and a group of fans have launched a campaign to name a street after him, according to Brimbank Weekly.

Scott lived in Sunshine between 1951-56 and attended Sunshine Primary School. Former Sunshine resident Paul Murphy is advocating for the Brimbank council to christen an unnamed lane, between Derby Road and Corio Street, Bon Scott Lane.

"More people know AC/DC than they do HV McKay and having a Bon Scott Lane will make Sunshine famous all around the world," he said. He would have walked down the laneway we're looking to dedicate to him, because it was a shortcut for kids to get to Sunshine Tech and Sunshine Primary." - more on this story

Papa Roach Vs Geffen
(Rock AAA) Papa Roach's new single Burn is a one-fingered salute to their former record label, says frontman Jacoby Shaddix.

The band are still fighting their way through a messy split with Geffen/Interscope in the US – and Shaddix say they're still owed a "good chunk" of money from their former stable.

"There's a lot of two-faced s*** in this business. Geffen/Interscope pissed me off – it was a really bad ending with them," He tells RockAAA. "They released a greatest hits record against our will. We told them we didn't want to do it because we were at completely the wrong point in our career." - more on this story

Paramore Plan Next Album
(Gibson) Paramore have been on the road for most of 2010, playing songs off their huge hit album, Brand New Eyes. But 2011 will find the band returning to the studio to record their follow-up release. Singer Hayley Williams told MTV.com that that Paramore will write and record in their home state of Tennessee.

"We like to do it at home mostly," Williams said. "We like to wait and kind of really focus on the records when we have time off." Guitarist Taylor York said it's not easy moving on to a new project: "We're kind of at the end of this record, but it's bittersweet."

But Williams seems a little more gung-ho. "[This year has] just been, like, one thing after another," she said. "[It's been a] high climb, and I hope we get to keep climbing for a little bit longer." - more on this story

Coldplay Plan Concept Album
(Gibson) Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has revealed that the band's fifth, full-length studio release will be a concept album. He told BBC News about the as-yet-untitled record.

"It's from the point of view of two people who are a bit lost," he said. "Two like-minded outsiders who meet in a very difficult environment and therefore have a journey together."

Martin said that the sound of the album will be markedly different from the grandiose sounds on Coldplay's previous album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. "It's a concept album but it's supposed to be very personal within a big framework," he said. - more on this story

Merry Christmas, Kiss My Ass From All Time Low
All Time Low have released a little ditty for the holiday season, "Merry Christmas, Kiss My Ass." By signing up for the All Time Low mailing list, fans can get a free download of the song.

Alex Gaskarth (vocalist, guitarist) eloquently the meaning of their Christmas song. "Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Parrots, Dogs, Cats and Salmon, 'Tis the season to be jolly-- the season of living and giving-- a season to be with family and friends, surrounded by warmth... Right?Right.

But for some, the holiday season is a bit of a mess. It comes as a reminder of the loss of a faithless, bitch lover whose frozen touch left icicles dangling from a broken heart. You know what I'm talking about right? That jerk-off who dumps you right before Christmas, and blames it on something like going back to college, when you know it's really just because they didn't want to fork out the bones to buy you the new version of Rock Band. No? Just me? - more on this story

Simon Cowell Horror For Xmas
(Rock AAA) X-Factor fans (or Simon Cowell) have chosen their (his) favourite singer for the karaoke gameshow's traditional assault on the UK Christmas Number One slot.

His name is Matt Cardle and the track is his version of Biffy Clyro song Many of Horror – only it's been renamed When We Collide. Meanwhile, Cowell, who ordered the name change, has taken the credit for people being interested in music, and is now planning to launch his own version of classic TV show Top of the Pops.

And Biffy's Simon Neil has sought to distance himself from the gameshow. He tells Kerrang: "I think when you look at the classic songs they've used in the past, like Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah for example, it hasn't really affected my take on the song. I still think the Jeff Buckley version is the best." - more on this story

Radiohead Star Scores Film
(Gibson) When guitarist Jonny Greenwood hasn't been busy enough with his duties in Radiohead, he has also served as composer-in-residence for the BBC Concert Orchestra. Sections of an orchestral piece Greenwood first performed and recorded with that group, "Doghouse," are now slated to become the primary themes of a film score for Norwegian Wood, a feature film based on a novel by Haruki Murakami.

"I wrote this piece mostly in hotels and dressing rooms while touring with Radiohead," Greenwood told Film Score Monthly. "This was more practical than glamorous – lots of time sitting around indoors, lots of instruments about – and aside from picking up a few geographical working titles, I can't think that it had any effect where, on tour, it was written.

There's supposed to be a theme (or at least a source of inspiration) in music like this, but it's hard to pin down." - more on this story

Guns N' Roses Tips For Working Guitarists
(Gibson) Everyone who has ever picked up a tennis racket and rocked out in front of the mirror has dreamed of chucking in their day job to be a rock star instead. And why not? The adoration, the freedom from the nine-to-five grind, the potential for romantic entanglement – it sounds like a pretty fun vocation. Well, the bad news is that not everyone gets to have a career as a rock star, but the good news is that with a little hard work and a lot of covering your bases, you may be able to still carve a living out of six strings and a dream. One guitarist who has managed to do just this is Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal.

Thal first made a name for himself in the mid-'90s with his wildly creative solo albums and unorthodox techniques, and since 2006 he's been one of three guitarists in Guns N' Roses, performing on every track of 2008's Chinese Democracy and criss-crossing the world with Axl and Co. While on tour with GN'R in Australia, Thal spoke exclusively to Gibson.com about how to make a career out of music.

He says the key is diversity. "You have to be able to multitask and be multi-faceted," he says. "If you're just going to be a guitar player that plays in a band, your options are going to be very limited. If you're going to play in a band, you should also be able to teach what you know. If you record yourself, then record other people as well and get into the studio thing. If you're taking care of a lot of the business for your band, maybe start doing it for other bands as well and get into that side of things."

Bob Dylan Inducted Into Gibson's Revolutionary Hall of Fame
(Gibson) Gibson.com is pleased to present the inaugural class of the Gibson Revolutionary Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame honors musical artists whose contributions went beyond mere entertainment and actually altered the art form, the business or the technology of popular music. This year's inductees were chosen in a recent poll on Gibson.com, asking fans and pros to decide the Top 50 Most Revolutionary Artists of the Past 100 Years. The list of inductees is composed of the top five vote recipients from the readers poll, as well as the top five from the overall combined poll of fans and professionals. As there was some overlap between the lists, a total of seven artists have been honored. Today we celebrate one such honoree: the legendary Bob Dylan.

In the early 1960s, Bob Dylan was the mumbled voice of revolution – whether he liked it or not. Amongst all the upheavals, all the excitement and tragedy of that discordant decade, what Dylan said was heartening and poetic, and it made great sense to young people. The mop-haired folk troubadour authored anthems "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They are-a-Changin'," among other masterpieces, that thrust him into the spotlight as a reluctant hero of both the civil rights and anti-war movements. Lyrics like "You better start swimmin' / Or you'll sink like a stone" fed that generation's call for change but also summarizedthe ethos that would steer Dylan's entire profession: Avoid stagnation at all costs.

Dylan began, innocuously enough, as Robert Allen Zimmerman. Born in 1941 to a pair of Jewish parents in Duluth, Minnesota, he was raised on Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Robert Johnson and Little Richard. For 50 years, he's funneled these sundry influences into his own music; time and again, with little notice, he's rolled up his sleeves and rummaged around in genres like folk, country, gospel, rock, blues and jazz.

Re-Twisted Sister
(Kayos) Eagle Rock has announced re-issues of Twisted Sister's Club Daze, Vol. 1 – The Studio Sessions and You Can't Stop Rock 'N' Roll, which hits stores January 25.

Hot on the heels of the recently released Live in Wacken – The Reunion DVD/CD (released October 2010), these two albums are epitaphs of the band's early days. Club Daze, Vol. 1 compiles recordings from 1972-1982, when Twisted Sister was a young, hungry pack of hard rockers doing time in clubs around New York City and Long Island. It was during these first ten years that they started brewing up a buzz, refining their stage act, and setting new records in fan attendance in over 50 clubs. Club Daze, originally released by Spitfire Records in 1999, captures a moment in time when TS laid the foundation that would lead them to become one of the world's most intense metal bands.

The long-overdue remaster for You Can't Stop Rock 'N' Roll (originally released via Atlantic in 1983 and later re-issued by Spitfire in 1999) brings out the punch that wasn't on the original CD versions. Finally presented in an aural setting not available when first mastered for CD, fans will finally be able to hear songs such as the hit "I Am (I'm Me)", "The Kids Are Back" and "Like A Knife In The Back" with the same sonic intensity as the band intended for the world to hear.

Bob Dylan Named Most Revolutionary Artist
(Gibson) In the history of music, there have been many great artists who have created tunes and made recordings that have been cherished by millions of people. And then, there are those who transcended mere greatness to become something even bigger. These are the game-changers, the ground-breakers, the explorers, the visionaries. These are the artists who took a look at the state of music and wondered, "Why can't it be this way?" These are the people and the groups who revolutionized music.

Gibson.com decided that these musical revolutionaries deserved special recognition for their influential and legendary achievements. In tribute, we're counting down the Top 50 Most Revolutionary Artists of the Past 100 Years – as voted on by Gibson's editorial team, writing staff and, most importantly, you, the readers.

Here is No 1) Bob Dylan: The so-called poet laureate of rock and roll sits atop this list, and rightfully so. It's unfathomable to imagine music without Dylan's game-changing approach to songwriting. It was a big enough deal in the folk community when the young performer opted not to play traditional songs, but wrote his own brilliant material about the imperfect universe we all call home. Dylan truly put music on its ear around the time when he went "electric," and simultaneously trained his artistic vision on the sort of things not typically discussed in pop singles. Some songs turned deeply personal, language became more colorful and structure crawled out the window, carried away amidst Bob's stream of consciousness. And everyone, everyone, took notice – the ones who couldn't copy his approach opted to cover his songs. Even rock's most hallowed band, The Beatles, followed him down to a place where little love ditties got complicated, story songs became more interesting and rock and roll turned into more than just teenage rebellion. If Dylan's writing is his most revolutionary contribution to music, it's certainly not his only one. He altered how a pop singer's voice could sound, changed how a music star could act and practically invented the notion of a rock and roll chameleon (traveling the path from clever folkie to sneering rocker to country balladeer in a couple of years). In the wake of his first glimpse of popularity, modern music has taken on Dylan's artistic characteristics – constantly restless, always changing, sometimes serious, sometimes goofy, and rarely dull, reflecting the world's worst tendencies and best aspirations, with the past in mind and the future in sight. He changed everything. – Bryan Wawzenek - Check out the full list here

Joe Perry To Team Up with Paul Rodgers
(Gibson) Joe Perry will take the stage with Bad Company's Paul Rodgers during Rodgers' April 27 solo show at the Robert Albert Hall in London, reports Classic Rock magazine. Rodgers has so far announced 11 dates for his solo tour of the U.K. next year.

This isn't the first time the two rockers have joined forces. This past April, The Joe Perry Project supported Bad Company along their eight-date U.K. tour, during which time Perry allegedly asked Rodgers if he'd consider replacing Steven Tyler as the frontman for Aerosmith.

A few months back, the Pulse of Radio asked Rodgers whether he'd ever rethink the offer to join Aerosmith. "I think not, you know, really," said Rodgers. "I've never really joined a band other than joining forces with Queen during which we were playing my songs and their songs. And I did speak to Joe at the awards ceremony in London. You know, he discussed some of the problems and we talked about music. I mean, the upshot is that he's gonna be bringing his solo band in support of the Bad Company tour in the U.K. I have enormous respect for all those guys, and I really hope that they iron out their problems and Aerosmith sticks together because they're such a great band." - more on this story

Liz Phair Collaborates With Dave Matthews
(Gibson) Liz Phair has shed light on her recent collaboration with Dave Matthews. Matthews produced several tracks on Phair's new album Funstyle and performs on one song, "You Should Know Me."

Phair told Spinner.com, "It's just a mutual admiration that came about a few years ago. Instantly, we liked each other. His entire production was an eye-opening experience. We don't come from the same culture, but the people that he surrounds himself with, and the kind of person he is, is so inspiring that I defy anybody to get to know him and not love him."

Phair, who will tour the U.S. east coast this month in support of her album, says she and Matthews worked well together because of their mutual musical respect. Mr. Big Comeback Album Coming in Feb
Mr. Big will release their new studio album, What If… , on February 8, 2011 on Frontiers Records.

What If… is Mr. Big's first all original album since the reunion of the four original members, Eric Martin, Paul Gilbert, Billy Sheehan and Pat Torpey back in early 2009. Sixteen years after the release of Hey Man, the new recording is set to bring back Mr. Big on the height of the current Hard Rock scene.

Guitarist Paul Gilbert said: "This is the first Mr. Big album I have been a part of, since fourteen years and it was done in a snap. It was fun and we had really a good time in making this one". Continues Billy Sheehan "It's so great to be back with Paul, Eric and Pat too. We wrote this record like we did in the old days for the first 2 records. Jamming together in the same room to write songs". Pat Torpey adds ""Some of the recording process is different now from what we were used to in the old times. But I think this record really managed to capture the performances of the band, not of the individual musicians".

Watch Paul McCartney Pay Tribute To John Lennon
(Gibson) On Thursday's edition of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Paul McCartney performed two very different songs – a spoof on The Beatles' megahit "Yesterday" and a poignant version of his John Lennon tribute song "Here Today."

McCartney began by dueting a cappella with Fallon on the song "Scrambled Eggs," which is an early version of "Yesterday," in which McCartney used the words "scrambled eggs/Oh baby how I love your legs" as placeholders to help him remember the song's ingenious melody. McCartney and Fallon also provided the song with some additional food-inspired lyrics – regarding waffle fries and vegetarian-friendly tofu wings.

Next came a performance of "Here Today," the John Lennon tribute song that McCartney included on his 1982 album Tug of War. This week marks the 30th anniversary of Lennon's murder. Of the song, McCartney said just beforehand, "This is like a song that's a conversation we never had. I always say to people, 'If you want to say to someone you love them, tell them now,' because there may come a point when it's too late and you think 'I wish you said that.'" - Watch here
