(hennemusic) Queen rocked the first Prince's Trust Rock Gala in more than 20 years, Wednesday night at London's Royal Albert Hall.

The BBC reports Brian May and Roger Taylor performed with a variety of singers, including Midge Ure ("Seven Seas Of Rhye") and Keane's Tom Chaplin ("It's a Hard Life").

Chaplin described Queen as the "heroes of my youth. I have notions of being a weirdly flamboyant frontman, and my voice is in the same register as Freddie's was - it's such a buzz to be backed by the actual band themselves." - more on this story

The Strokes Finish New Album
(Gibson) The Strokes have finished recording their fourth album. The announcement came via frontman Julian Casablancas' Twitter account: "Still not going to be out for a few months – mixing, etc, but JUST finally finished it yesterday actually!?"

The album, which has not yet been given a title, will be the New York rockers' follow-up to First Impressions of Earth, released almost five years ago in January of 2006. Making the album hasn't been the easiest process for the band. "There is disagreement as to whether the songs are ready," Casablancas told Spin last year. "Some of the band think they are and others don't. I'm somewhere in the middle."

The band were able to come together and started recording in March of this year with Beck and White Stripes producer John Chicarelli. Casablancas said that fans should expect the new album to sound similar to the previous one, before admitting, "I may try to funk it up a little bit." -

Nirvana Unplugged Anniversary
(Gibson) On this day in 1993, Nirvana recorded their MTV Unplugged special at Sony Studios, New York. Gibson takes a closer look: In their early days, Nirvana and MTV Unplugged sort of ran parallel paths. Nirvana released their debut album on indie label Sub Pop in 1989. MTV Unplugged, conceived as an acoustic showcase for musicians, debuted on its namesake cable channel in 1989, with performances from Squeeze, Syd Straw and Elliot Easton. Two years later, Unplugged became a bigger deal, with high profile shows featuring Paul McCartney and LL Cool J. Around the same time in 1991, Nirvana became one of the biggest bands in the world with the release of Nevermind and the angsty anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

From that moment, MTV producers were dead set on getting Nirvana to do an Unplugged show for the network. Kurt Cobain and Co. resisted initially, mostly because they weren't too thrilled with the series. Drummer Dave Grohl remembers: "We'd seen the other Unpluggeds and didn't like many of them, because most bands would treat them like rock shows – play their hits like it was Madison Square Garden except with acoustic guitars."

In the meantime, both Nirvana and Unplugged continued to gain fame. Nirvana continued to release hits off Nevermind and toured the world. Unplugged drew bigger and bigger stars – such as Mariah Carey, Eric Clapton (who won Grammys for his Unplugged performance) and Nirvana's grunge pals Pearl Jam. Finally, in the fall of 1993, following the release of In Utero and while on tour with the Meat Puppets, the band agreed to play Unplugged. - more on this story

Jim Morrison To Be Pardoned
(Gibson) Recently, we reported that outgoing Florida Governor Charlie Crist was "looking into" pardoning the late Jim Morrison for his conviction of indecent exposure and profanity at a Miami concert. Now, it seems Crist is moving forward with those plans. He announced that he will officially submit Morrison's name to his state's clemency board as a candidate to be pardoned.

"I've decided to do it, for the pure and simple reason that I just think it's the right thing to do," Crist told The New York Times. "In some ways it seems like a tragic conclusion to a young man's life to have maybe this be a lasting legacy, where we're not even sure that it actually occurred. The more that I've read about the case and the more I get briefed on it, the more convinced I am that maybe an injustice has been done here."

Morrison, by many accounts, was drunk during a Doors concert in 1969, during which he gave a wild and unruly performance. After the show, the singer was charged with lewd and lascivious behavior, a felony, as well as several misdemeanors. In 1970, he was convicted of profanity and indecent exposure and was sentenced to six months of prison time with a $500 fine. The rock legend never served the time though. He was still appealing the ruling when he died in Paris in 1971. - more on this story

KISS is All About Brand not Band?
(hennemusic) Gene Simmons of Kiss delivered a keynote address at the 5th annual M For Montreal music conference on Wednesday.

His message continues to be the same, regardless of the forum: "You're allowed to have a band, or you can have a brand."

"What we all want to recognize is that a name means something," added Gene. "It doesn't matter what it is: whether it has music, whether it's a religious symbol, a political symbol, or a politician – everything should be a brand." - more including video

Singled Out: The City Champs
Today Al Gamble from The City Champs tells us about the title track from their brand new album "The Set-Up". Here is the story:

About two or three weeks before we were scheduled to go into the studio to record our second album, the three of us had already put together most of the tunes. The songs we had prepared were mainly written by Joe Restivo. George Sluppick and I helped some with the melodies and tweaking, but Joe is the main writer in the band. I knew I needed to contribute something to this new record, and was putting a little pressure on myself to write something before we went into the studio. Honestly, I'm not sure exactly how I got the idea for The Set-Up. The band had moved away from the Boogaloo influence of the first album (The Safecracker) to more of a Booker T. and the MGs influence with the material we had so far. So, I tried keeping this tune in that vein. One morning after my wife went to work and our three girls were at school, I sat down at the organ in my living room and came up with the melody for the A section of The Set-Up. I felt like it had a Hang 'em High feel, especially with the call and response between the organ and guitar. After a couple of days of messing with it on my own we got together for a rehearsal and I let the guys hear it to get their opinion. Joe suggested a nice chord substitution for the A section, and George immediately came up with the right groove and we were off. I had the basic idea for the B section ready to go but it still needed some tweaking. Joe and George helped pull it all together.

Once we had it rehearsed and felt comfortable we started playing it live. One of the hardest things about writing original instrumentals is coming up with names for the songs. The Set-Up was originally called Overlander, named after a particular model of vintage Airstream travel trailers. Just before I had written the song I had purchased an old Airstream trailer. I thought it would be cool to name an instrumental tune after some Airstream reference. We called it Overlander for several weeks, and some City Champs fans may even find bootleg recordings of it from our tour in February 2010 with the North Mississippi Allstars. When it came time to choose cuts for the album, Scott Bomar, our label owner and producer, wasn't crazy about the name. It just didn't sound like the song. So I came up with a list of alternate names. The Set-Up seemed the most obvious of the bunch, and it ended up being the title of the album. It makes for a much better album title than Overlander.

In addition to the influence differences on the second album, we also decided to add some horns and percussion that weren't present on the first record. The Safecracker is a true organ trio with just the three of us taping live. We recorded the second album as a trio, live and straight to analog tape, but also brought in some friends to add a little depth to some of the tracks. We felt like The Set-Up single didn't really need horns or congas. But this song did greatly benefit from the masterful tambourine playing of legendary Jack Ashford of Motown fame. Little known to a lot of people in Memphis, musicians included, Jack lives in nearby north Mississippi. He still tours with the Funk Brothers and makes an annual trip to Europe, but he rarely gets called to do studio work in Memphis. Scott had known that Jack lived here and had been waiting for the right time to call him in and work with him. He came in to add tambourine to a few tracks on the album, and The Set-Up ended up being one of those tracks. The tambourine on The Set-Up is absent in the first two minutes of the song, but when it comes in it just brings the song to a new level. Something that seems so simple added so much. Plus, it was just a pleasure to work with Jack. It was one of those special musician moments, not just the recording together, but listening to his stories from the Motown days. It also completely changed the way I listen to those old Motown tracks. The tambourine is the first thing I hear now when those songs come on the radio.

Now that you know the story behind the song learn more about the album - right here!

Jeff Beck's Rock And Roll Party To Honor Les Paul Coming To DVD and CD
Eagle Rock Entertainment and ATCO will release Rock And Roll Party To Honor Les Paul on DVD and CD February 22.

Jeff Beck paid fitting tribute to Les Paul last summer, celebrating what would have been the pioneering guitarist's 95th birthday by playing his friend and mentor's music, along with classic tunes from the era, in the same Times Square nightclub that Paul played every Monday for 14 years before his death in August 2009.

Sponsored by Gibson Guitar and billed as "A Celebration of Les Paul," Beck was joined by The Imelda May Band at the Iridium Jazz Club in June 2010. The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee mesmerized the star-studded audience with a tour de force performance of classics Paul recorded with Mary Ford, "How High The Moon," "Vaya Con Dios" and "Mockin' Bird Hill," along with such rock and roll standards as "Twenty Flight Rock" and "Walking In The Sand."

Help PBS Remember John Lennon
PBS is asking viewers to record and upload memories of John Lennon to become part of "Remembering Lennon," a new online video exhibition tied to the American Masters film "LENNONYC," airing November 22 at 9:00 p.m. ET (check local listings) on PBS.

Starting November 18, PBS will accept user-generated videos through its PBS Arts website (www.pbs.org/arts), which was launched earlier this year to give Americans the chance to experience the arts and explore the creative process through virtual art exhibits, videos from PBS national and local programs and interactive features.

PBS president Paula Kerger, in one of the first videos featured on the site, recalls a personal connection to Lennon: "When I think about John Lennon music, one thing I think about is when I first met my husband in high school. The album Walls and Bridges had just come out, and he had an 8-track player in his car. I remember listening to that great album over and over again as we drove around. It's the album I was listening to when I fell in love, so it's very special to me."
