Gene Simmons Lost Eyebrow In Fall
As we reported yesterday, KISS founder Gene Simmons was hospitalized on Sunday after passing out at the Los Angeles International Airport. On Tuesday Gene issued the following update to fans via KISSonline:

So, Miss Tweed and I were at LAX... we got some Decaf Coffee and some eggs... and there I am munching and taking a few sips... and then, I feel this rush of heat from my feet up to my head... and then apparently I blacked out.

I woke up in a nearby hospital. I was told I passed out due to dehydration, lack of sleep, and just pure exhaustion. I spent a night at the hospital and found, to my surprise, half of my left eyebrow literally fell off... I must have hit the ground hard. I don't remember. So, there I am being stitched up, eating hospital food, and itchy to get back to work. I'm back home. All is well. I've been getting lots of emails and calls asking if everything is fine. Yes. Thank you. All is well. -

Red Hot Chili Peppers Going Afro Pop
(Gibson) The Red Hot Chili Peppers are experimenting with African sounds on their new album, according to drummer Chad Smith. He told Spin.com that the new style was partially inspired by a trip that bassist Flea and new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer (formerly the band's touring guitar player) took to Lagos, Nigeria and Ethiopia.

"That music just moves to a different groove, it's not your typical Western four-four. The rhythms are so infectious," Smith said. "We're not trying to cop that thing but we're just doing our take on it. Hopefully we'll come up with something new."

Smith said Flea also has been writing a lot of tunes for the new album, often composing on piano. "That's a different thing. There's quite a wide variety," Smith said. - more on this story

Lil Wayne 90s Rock Mashup Hits A Snag
We were sent this update on Tuesday: Cash Money Records and Universal Group have sent a cease and desist letter to DJ Alexei in an attempt to stop the release of Lil Wayne's remix album that features mashups of the artist's material with classic 90s recordings from Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins and other influential rock acts.

The album, Weezy's 90s Ball, Vol. 1 is currently scheduled for November 4, 2010 to coincide with Lil Wayne's release from jail.

The album's producer DJ Alexei has expressed regret at the labels' decision, but remained optimistic that Lil Wayne's fans would get to hear the album. "While I'm flattered that label executives see Weezy's 90s Ball as a threat to the 'I Am Not a Human Being' profits, they are being shortsighted - the fans will buy the official release even if they had downloaded Weezy's 90s Ball because these are two completely different bodies of work," said Alexei. - more on this story

Iron Maiden's Dickinson Goes Silent For Vets
Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson was recently invited to take part in a unique project instigated by the Royal British Legion for its official charity single "2 Minutes Silence". Iron Maiden's site had these details: The single features noiseless contributions from representatives of our society, including some very famous faces, harnessing the sound of silence in a bid to raise much needed funds exclusively for the Royal British Legion, a registered Charity which supports serving and ex-serving members of the armed forces community who need assistance.

The single takes the form of a silent video with participants shown in quiet reflection and will be on sale from November 7th and the Legion hopes to get it to number one for Remembrance Sunday (November 14th), the day Britain pays tribute to members of the armed forces community who have made sacrifices, including today's Afghan generation. It can be downloaded from iTunes on November 7th, costing 99p. The concept behind the single being silent is that the Legion felt that the British public would recognize the poignancy of silence and its clear association with remembrance and Remembrance Sunday in particular, or "Poppy Day" as it is often called.

Says Bruce "When I first heard about the concept of the 2 Minutes Silence single, my first thought was it was the work of a madman... my second thought was, no -- it's the work of a genius! Many people have forgotten what Remembrance Sunday is really about. Hopefully this will serve to create more awareness of this and of those who risk paying the ultimate sacrifice. It's an honour to be involved with this project" - more on this story

Duff McKagan Endorses His Guns N' Roses Replacement
(hennemusic) In the latest edition of his regular column at Seattle Weekly, Duff McKagan gives a "shout out" to his replacement in Guns N' Roses, Tommy Stinson.

"About a week and a half ago, I had the pleasure of hanging out with Tommy Stinson. For those of you who don't know, he is the guy who replaced me in Guns N' Roses. But also for those of you who don't know, Tommy is known to a lot of us music fans for his work in his first band, The Replacements.

"Our meeting last week was by no means the first time we have hung out. No, back in 1983, my band 10 Minute Warning opened for The Replacements right here in Seattle, at the long-defunct punk club Metropolis. Tommy is a great f**king guy, and I always come away glad when our paths have crossed over the years." - more on this story

Behind the Video: Act As If's Old Souls
Today Act As If tell us the story behind their first full-length video for the song "Old Souls" from their album "There's A Light." Here you go!

We wanted to keep this video pretty straightforward and performance-based, kind of a 'simple is good' idea. The director, Chris Cullari, came up with the treatment, which was basically to have us perform in a room full of old newspapers, and then slowly paint over the bad headlines with bright, hopeful images as the song progressed.

We found some incredible newspaper headlines to use for the shoot…some original copies, and some reprints. It's intense to hold an LA Times with the title "Beatle John Lennon Slain." The idea behind painting over the old headlines was not to discredit the tragedies behind them, but to focus instead on the idea of moving forward: the idea that we can still create new, good things…regardless of the past.

The entire process was a great experience for everyone in the band, and I think it was for the crew as well. Being our first full-length video, we really had no idea how much work needed to go into it [the answer: a lot]. But thankfully, it was also a lot of fun, and we hope that people enjoy it.

Now that you know the story behind this video, you can watch it for yourself - right here!

Howard Fishman Releases Music Trilogy
Howard Fishman released a trilogy of recordings this week. Each was recorded simultaneously with vastly different musical palettes and each CD is set against a specific geographical backdrop: New Orleans (Better Get Right), Romania (No Further Instructions), and Brooklyn, NY (The World Will Be Different).

A fall/winter tour has been set, with stops throughout New England, Upstate NY and the Mid-Atlantic Region, and a three night stand in NYC's Abrons Arts Center, where Fishman will perform each new record in its entirety, on successive evenings and with different ensembles.

Recorded over a period of eighteen months, with overlapping personnel, the trilogy begins with BETTER GET RIGHT, Fishman's love letter to New Orleans, his adopted home when just starting out as a struggling street musician in the mid-90's. Backed by his New Orleans-style brass band (dubbed "The Biting Fish"), BETTER GET RIGHT is a set of originals interspersed with new takes on traditionals and gospel from the Big Easy repertoire. The music is by turns funky, intimate, dirty, and reverential.
