(Gibson) In a new blog post, Pete Townshend has revealed he is working on a new, deluxe reissue of The Who's Quadrophenia. The Who guitarist and songwriter hopes that the box set edition of the 1973 rock opera will be ready for a fall release.
"I am shut away in my home studio at the moment working to restore the demos of Quadrophenia," Townshend wrote, according to Rolling Stone. "Bob Pridden is doing surround-sound mixes of selected tracks. Jon Astley is remastering the original vinyl mix, and evaluating his own 1996 remix (the one where you can properly hear Roger's astonishing vocals). I am sitting in a pile of notes, desk diaries, photos (I took a lot of my own between 1971-1973 when Quadrophenia emerged), original lyrics and writing liner notes."
The rock legend said that he's having a good time working on the project and that fans are in for some surprises. "I am really enjoying this work. Bob's mixes are mind-blowing. My demos are among the best I've ever done, and include some real quirky tracks that didn't make it onto the final album," he said. "This package, due in October if all goes well, is another Live at Leeds and Hull or even another Lifehouse Chronicles in the making. You are going to love it. I hope so, because I am missing this summer sunshine to get it completed on time." more on this story

One of our most popular features on antiMusic is our Singled Out series where musicians tell us the story behind their new songs. Today we doing something a little different, presenting the story behind a classic song. The tale of Prince's hit "Kiss" comes to us from the new book 'Prince: Chaos, Disorder, and Revolution?' by Jason Draper. We'll have a review of the book next week but today, Jason shares the story behind "Kiss":
Prince took over the three studios at Sunset Sound while working on the [Parade] album. He used one for Parade, another for his side project The Family, and a third for an album by the Minneapolis band Mazarati, which was being produced by David Rivkin and Revolution bassist Mark Brown. Legend has it that he had cut the first four songs for Parade on the spot, in sequence: that he sat down behind the drums, asked Susan Rogers to roll the tape, and played through all of the drum tracks, using only his handwritten lyrics as guidance, then added the bass, keyboards, guitars, and vocals to each of the songs, one after another.
For most listeners, the highlight of Prince's 1986 album Parade was "Kiss," a song Prince almost didn't record. His cavalier attitude to giving away new songs (see "Manic Monday," reclaimed from Apollonia 6 during the Purple Rain/Apollonia 6 sessions, but unreleased until Prince gave it to The Bangles) made him believe that he could write hit tracks for just about anybody, even if he hadn't masterminded the band's image and sound. more on the story
Next door to where Prince was recording Parade, Revolution bassist Mark Brown and engineer Bobby Rivkin were working on a self-titled album by a group known as Mazarati. Brown had started playing with the group on the Minneapolis club scene during a break from touring with The Revolution. Not wanting to end up the same way as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (who were fired by Prince for moonlighting with another band), he wore a mask on stage and called himself The Shadow. After a while, however, Brown knew that he would have to come clean to Prince or face serious consequences. But when he did, Prince surprised him by deciding to take Mazarati under his wing.

Australia's twisted outlaw country rockers Wagons' Rumble have set their sights on the U.S. this summer. The group will release their stateside debut, Shake & Tumble, on August 16th. Here is the background info we were sent:
While the title Rumble, Shake & Tumble goes a long way in describing Wagons' unruly yet easy-to-like roots-rock sound, all you really have to do is listen to the disc's opening lines. The leadoff track "Downlow," a Tom Petty/Traveling Wilburys-ish jangly rocker, begins with a man proclaiming that his girl's mama "doesn't like me none/she's got every reason under the sun/Your daddy think I'm okay/But not for his little Pamela May." These words nicely encapsulate frontman Henry Wagons' charming but slightly dangerous way with music. more on this story
Listen to Rumble, Shake & Tumble, out August 16, 2011 on Thirty Tigers, and it's easy to fall under Wagons' sway. Their unruly sound, which has made them a popular act in their native Australia, draws upon rock 'n' roll, country, funk, cabaret, psychedelia and soul all tied together by Henry Wagons' delightfully twisted vision. With his gentle growl, he comes off like a cross between Leon Russell and his fellow Aussie Nick Cave as he couples Russell's laidback cool with Cave's noir hipness.

Hello! Eric here from Derelict. I'm going to tell you the story behind our song 'Perpetuation', off our 2011 promo EP. The track will be on our upcoming full-length album, and is currently a free download on [our bandcamp page]
We never really stop writing in Derelict. Right after the release of our 2009 album, 'Unspoken Words', we were already working on new stuff. In fact, everyone in the band writes music and we currently have songs from myself, our guitar player Max, and our drummer Jordan in the works.
However, mid-2010 we went through a bit of a crisis on tour with some important lineup changes. The remaining core of the band was left pondering our future and trying to envision what to do about moving forward. It was around this time that I started working on the music for 'Perpetuation'. It wasn't entirely intentional, but I think I wanted to remind myself, in one streamlined song, what Derelict meant to me musically. I endeavored to include all of our best characteristics into something that would scream, not only to the fans, but to us, "we're here, we're alive, and we're not going anywhere!"
The song starts with a relatively simple melodic riff, but in true Derelict fashion, it is tremolo-picked, backed by a blast beat, and arranged in an odd time signature (14/4). The verse kicks in right after, and is a sort of ballsy death/thrash riff that utilizes the low end of our 7-string guitars. The chorus is a bit of a hurricane (and really hard to sing over on beat) with Jordan opting to do some insane drum stuff I don't even understand rather than playing it safe. The first bridge is head-banging riff, but if you listen to the guitars closely, it's also really technical. It ends with a harmonized melodic run that foreshadows the end of the song. The intro then comes back, and I decided I wanted to really push my vocals. I hold an ascending high scream, followed by a few staccato words, followed by another held scream, this one lower. The next riff after that is kind of a breakdown. When I first brought it in, Jordan thought it was too simple, and he explained an odd time signature idea he had in 13/8. We included that and it makes the part more of a tech-down than a breakdown, haha. Another verse-chorus-bridge run leads into the outro, which is a giant melodic/blasting/blackened death celebration. It contains a dual sustained scream by Max and I, and another sort of vocal experiment at the end where I pitched my vocals a little bit and let some of the emotion from my "normal" voice peek through. The whole thing is at 220 bpm and is a bit of a workout for everyone.
So that's that, be sure to check out Jordan's drum video for this song on our youtube page: [here] so you can see those parts I described.
