Day in Rock Report for 10/12/2012

Aerosmith Dismiss KISS As A Comic Book Rock Band
(hennemusic) Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry were interviewed on radio morning and when the host commented about seeing the two bands play together in 2003, saying that Aerosmith's set was "like you were watching a different level of concert." Tyler had a strong response.

"KISS is a comic-book rock band," Tyler told the host of the The Cowhead Show on 102.5 The Bone in Tampa Bay, Florida. "They've got a couple of hits, but they're more, they're comic book — you see them in their spackled faces."

"We were always a band that had something to prove," he continued. "We always wanted to blow off whatever band it was. And I remember when we went out with KISS in '76 or something, one of our roadies got into a knife fight with their guys. And I hated them ever since. But, you know, since then I've gotten to know Gene [Simmons] and Paul [Stanley], and they're beautiful people."

"But it is different," explained Tyler. "A KISS lick and a Joe Perry lick — two different worlds, and I, sometimes — depending on the time of day — get offended. I hear that and go, 'It's alright. But do they really mean it?' And, 'What's this all about?' And that's why I think Aerosmith has been around forever. We really do take ourselves seriously. And I feel like you do. We would come on stage [after KISS] and I would think it was a little 'comic book.'" Read more and listen to the interview here.

Richie Blackmore Could Care Less About Deep Purple Rock Hall Nod
(hennemusic) Deep Purple are among the first-time nominees considered for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's Class of 2013 and legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore doesn't appear to be excited by the prospect.

"Personally, I couldn't care less," Blackmore tells Billboard. "I would never go. I'm not really a fan of that stuff. Considering some of the people that are in the Hall of Fame, I'm not sure if it's a good idea, so I don't care one way or the other, actually."

"I think our fans seem to care more than I do," he notes. "They're always saying, 'You should be in the Hall of Fame. You should be in this, you should be in that...' If I can pay the bills, that's all I care about." more on this story

Queen's Brian May Confirms Freddie Mercury Biopic Is On The Way
Queen's Brian May informed fans this week that plans for the biopic of their late frontman Freddie Mercury are moving forward.

'Da Ali G Show' and 'Borat' star Sacha Baron Cohen is set to portray Mercury in the film. May provided the following details in his update on his official website:

"Ah … I promised news of yesterday's Queen band meeting. Well, it was just Roger and Jim Beach and myself … we are a small cottage industry !! Our main agenda was the Freddie film … which, I'm happy to tell you, is on course. Much of our discussion was about contractual things … it's pretty complex …. and determining who is responsible for what. The pieces are all falling into place, though we are now on a slightly later schedule – filming is now scheduled to start in the Spring, with Sacha Baron Cohen playing Freddie. The film should be ready for release early in 2014."

Story Of The Doobie Brothers Coming to DVD and Blu-Ray
Eagle Rock has set a November 13, 2012 release date for Let The Music Play: The Story Of The Doobie Brothers on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Video.

Here is the synopsis: Let The Music Play is the authorized story of The Doobie Brothers from their beginnings in California in 1970 to worldwide success, selling over 40 million albums during their long career. The film features interviews with band members Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, John McFee ,Tiran Porter, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, their manager Bruce Cohn and long term producer Ted Templeman, revealing the full story of the band's highs and lows through four decades of musical evolution.

The Doobie Brothers breakthrough came with "Listen To The Music" in 1972, and they went on to experience both sustained success and line-up changes in the mid-seventies. The band made a change of musical direction and enjoyed further success following the arrival of Michael McDonald in 1976. Worn out by non-stop touring and internal disagreements, the band broke up after a "farewell" concert in 1982. There were sporadic reunions in the eighties before the band reformed permanently in the early nineties and have continued touring and recording ever since.

The Ataris' Drummer Fires Back At Singer Following Onstage Meltdown
(TMZ) The Ataris' ex-drummer Rob Felicetti -- who got ATTACKED on stage by his lead singer last weekend -- is flatly denying he has a drinking problem ... telling TMZ, the singer's drum-smashing outburst was completely unjustified.

No surprise, Rob says he's officially quitting the band after singer Kris Roe's crazy guitar-throwing drum-kicking meltdown -- which was caught on tape -- telling us, Kris' "actions were petty, uncalled for, inexcusable, immature, and an embarrassment to both bands and fans alike."

Felicetti admitts he was having "an off night" but calls Roe's outburst "tantamount to that of an 11-year-old girl unable to obtain tickets to a One Direction concert." (No offense to 1Ders)

He also says Roe's video apology to fans -- in which he accuses Felicetti of over-boozing -- is all lies.

Felicetti tells us no one in the band, including himself, had a drinking problem ... and it was never discussed until Kris tried making the ole "rock-n-roll" excuse "for throwing a drum set at another human being … namely me."

He adds, "Never have I felt more violated or betrayed by someone I once called a friend." more on this story

B Sides

Singled Out: Chris Lawhorn's Fugazi Edits
Today Chris Lawhorn tells us about the song, "Nice New Outfit / Greed / Walken's Syndrome / Facet Squared / No Surprise," from his forthcoming album, 'Fugazi Edits.' Here is the story:

Fugazi Edits is my forthcoming album of instrumental music created using samples from the band Fugazi's catalog. In an attempt to keep some parts of the album straightforward, the track names are simply lists of the songs sampled. To that end, the album opener is entitled "Nice New Outfit / Greed / Walken's Syndrome / Facet Squared / No Surprise."

Of all the tracks on the album, this is the likeliest to pass for an actual Fugazi instrumental. It's the first track I made. It's one of two tracks that sample five different songs, as the rest of the tracks employed four songs apiece. And, I wasn't yet sure how I wanted to approach the album. So, the track is pretty linear and the samples are layered in a fairly obvious way.

Because it was the first track, I remember pretty clearly the actual mixing. I was playing a six week residency on South Padre Island during spring break. So, I spent most of that span working on Fugazi Edits during the day and then playing pop and dance in the clubs at night.

As production started, I wondered if the projects would seep into each other. In particular, I thought I might find myself mixing Fugazi drum breaks into my club sets or creating a more beat-heavy, dance-oriented album than I'd expected.

If anything, the opposite was true. I can't say that my DJ sets got poppier as the month went on--as they were already pretty heavy on hits and floor fillers. But, getting that out of my system at night probably allowed me to make more adventurous, less coherent approaches to the album by day.

In any event, that's the direction the album went and my best guesses as to why it shaped up the way it did.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album and listen to the first tracks from the album right here!

Sinatra Inspired Iron Maiden Classic
(Gibson) Iron Maiden frontman Brice Dickinson has revealed that the inspiration for the band's hit song, "Run to the Hills," was none other than legendary crooner Frank Sinatra's version of "My Way."

He finished off his speech with explaining why the band's song "Run to the Hills" became a hit single.

Tom Petty Auctioning Off His Jaguar
Tom Petty is auctioning off his personal 1996 Jaguar XJS Convertible on e-bay to benefit Doctors Without Borders.

Tom recalls what the car means to him personally, saying "I have so many great memories associated with this car. When I began dating Dana (my wife) I asked her what her favorite car was. So, I phoned the office and said I wanted a Champagne convertible Jaguar XJS. The next day they delivered it to my house and showed me how everything worked and I took it for a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. I was in heaven, as was Dana. This car has such and incredible design. My favorite car I ever owned. We sure are going to miss it."

1996 was a historic year for the XJS model Jaguar as that was the final year of production after 21 years. You can check out the auction here.
