AKO - Tomorrow Night’s Regret

AKO - Tomorrow Night’s Regret
Rating

Listening to Tomorrow Night’s Regret, a four-song EP from the English band AKO, at first made me feel really old.  As in, “Is this what the kids are listening to today?”  For the record, I’m only 30 and it scares me a little that I had that thought about any band.

AKO has supported the likes of Avenged Sevenfold, which may give you an idea of what to expect from this band.  There are a lot of heavy guitar riffs and a pretty good rhythm section.  Musically these guys are not bad at all.

If you can sense a “but” coming, you’re right.  The one thing on this album that really turned me off was the guttural screaming vocals that I can’t understand at all.  The backing vocalist may be saying something really profound, but I’ll never know because it all comes out sounding like “YAWRAWLAHYEHYEH!”

At their best, AKO remind me of Alkaline Trio.  Frankly, I can think of worse bands to be compared to.  Their songs have pounding rhythms and wicked guitars with some pretty good lead vocals.  At their worst, which is whenever the backing vocals come through, they sound like a tape of someone’s primal scream therapy.  The good news is that it’s only four songs, the best of which is a toned-down hidden track tucked away at the end of track four.  The bad news is, that of the 19 minutes and change on this disc, all that sticks in my mind is the background screaming.
