Billy Butcher – Penny Dreadful
By Zane Ewton

Billy Butcher – Penny Dreadful
Label: Outlaw Records
Rating:

Canadian-bred Pete Parker mixes AC/DC riffs, southern rock twang and a healthy interest in whiskey to create an enjoyably dumb album.  Parker is the driving force in Billy Butcher, writing the songs, playing guitar and handling lead vocals.

Heavily influenced by southern culture, sex and drugs, Penny Dreadful is 30 minutes of rumbling rock and roll.  The music is carefully crafted but the lyrics are laughable.  Parker brags “my balls are big enough to start the third world war” and pines for Texas, “I hope the Alamo holds”.

You get the feeling that Parker hasn’t even been to Texas, but his enthusiasm is contagious and you will quickly forgive him.  Billy Butcher would benefit from a stronger lead vocalist as that is the weakest trait of Penny Dreadful.  Parker shouts and rambles without the swagger that is required of this music.

Penny Dreadful is beer drinking music made by a high quality bar band.  Billy Butcher created an album of dumb, loud rock and roll.  The way it should be.
