Fans of the ska-punk genre will find a first-rate addition to their record collection with Addiccion, Tradicion, Y Revolucion from the Voodoo Glow Skulls.

It is an album based on the archetypal formula of thick guitars and horns.  Addiccion is 14 tracks of untainted energy, including a cover of Guns ‘n’ Roses “Used to Love Her”.

The horns have a Latin flavor that is tacked up against the forceful rock riffs.  While there is not much in the way of innovation on Addiccion the band is very good at sticking to the plan and using what tools they have for the maximum effect.

Some of the tracks start to run together at times but the album is something that should be viewed as a whole; a cohesive unit, dedicated to one purpose.  The magic driving force is in the bands energy.  The songs are relentless in pace.   Don’t expect to breathe until it’s all said and done with.

The production is done well; the guitars are crisp and give maximum impact.  The horns are clean, and the vocals stand out.  These are the kinds of songs that will fit a live show very well.  The Voodoo Glow Skulls have something that is very appealing about them; I would hate to call it an image, but the songs and the imagery all blend together so well that you can’t help but like the band.

From the opening dialogue sample from “A Clockwork Orange” to the ending song about burying your love in the backyard, the Skulls walk along a line of gritty ideas that are shared with a wry smile.

Some tracks like “Mayhem and Murder” play it too straight and end up losing their effect; we’ve all heard anti-consumerism and other punk ideal songs, it will take a little more work to serve up the message in a way that might sink in.  It’s the songs like "Ghettoblaster” and “DD Don’t Like Ska”, that stand out.

A good sense of humor and some loud guitars will get you very far.
