Green Day - Suburbia Bomb DVD Review
by Greenmuse

Ok, I admit it. I'm not the biggest Green Day fan. Some of their tunes are decent, but i wouldnt say I own their entire discography. I think I have Kerplunk somewhere and my mother in law bought American Idiot for me on my birthday(I loved it). But I've been a fan of the East Bay music scene of the 80's for a long time, so I was pretty excited at the chance to review this.

Suburbia Bomb is an unauthorized documentary which sadly means no songs by Green Day appear on this film, which I think really sort of takes away from it. But the overall scope of the film sorta makes up for it. Though it would be nice to have the music there to show the band's progression from Gilman to being one of the biggest pop punk acts ever. Unauthorized usually also means scathing, but the band is painted in a very positive light by the people who speak on the band. They say you can judge people by what other say about them. If that counts for something the chaps in Green Day must be good people. The two people I was most excited to see on here were: Jesse Michaels of Op Ivy fame, and Winston Smith, of many album covers fame(probably most famous for Dead Kennedys artwork).

The DVD tells a pretty complete tale of Green Day, though it appears to be a repackaged earlier release as its dated 2005, but it cuts off after the recording of their album before American Idiot. It starts off speaking about Billie Joe's childhood in rodeo, and how he met up with the other guys. It spends a good while on their Gilman and Lookout time. Which pleased me greatly, Gilman is in my book one of the holiest music shrines ever. Supposedly Green Day still gives money to Gilman(which if its true, is pretty cool of them), despite the crowd there being hostile to them. Jesse Michaels speaks a good deal about doing shows with them and doing the art for their first release. The later years are kinda covered a lot quicker than the earlier bits. Which is good as from Dookie onwards who doesn't know about these guys?

Pretty good DVD for the casual fan. I'm sure people really into this band know of better DVD's. But this fit the bill for me. Though I wished it had more of the band in it, as well as early footage and their music. Of course, then it would be authorized wouldn't it?
