Brian Hartzog calls his music “Funk &
Roll” and I have to say that I couldn’t really come up with a better description.
One-Way Ticket starts out with two straight-up funk songs, “Christmas
in July” and “Motha Funky”. “Motha Funky” will make you want to move
and it has some pretty good lyrics, especially in the last two minutes
of the song.
Hartzog mixes in some heavy doses of guitar
also on songs like “Daily Grind” and “In from the Metro”. “Daily
Grind” is a good rockin’ tune about life in the office. Do yourself
a favor when you listen to this song. Pay attention to the lyrics
and realize how frequently Hartzog nails some aspect of office life right
on the head.
On this album, Hartzog shows himself to
be a talented musician and songwriter with a vast array of influences.
In addition to the funk rock, Hartzog displays some ska influence on “Alright
to Drive”. “Amy’s Run Away” sounds like a story that belongs in a
song by fellow Tarheels, The Backsliders.
There are a couple songs on this disc that
didn’t really register on my radar, but overall, it’s a solid effort.
If you like to get your funk with some serious rock guitar, then this album
is for you.
