Jessica Simpson Inks Sitcom Deal With ABC

Update: Pop singer Jessica Simpson has signed
on for not one, but two TV shows. She has has signed a development deal
with ABC to produce a new sitcom. Simpsons father and manger Joe Simpson
and former ABC Entertainment President Ted Harbert will executive produce
the new comedy. She has also inked a deal for a second season of her hit
MTV reality show "Newlyweds", which will air in 2004.
"Jessica has infectious energy and unmistakable
star quality," said ABC Entertainment President Susan Lyne. "She also has
a built-in fan base in both music and television, which is a great jumping
off point for us. We're looking forward to developing the ideal showcase
for her considerable talents."
The 23-year-old singer has made minor headlines
with some of her blond moments on the MTV reality show Newlyweds: Nick
& Jessica," which stars Simpson and her husband Nick Lachey (98 Degrees).
The most famous moment came during the series opener when Simpson asked
her new husband what she was eating, "Is this chicken, what I have, or
is this fish. I know it's tuna, but it says 'Chicken by the Sea.'"
Another blond moment came when she refused
to eat buffalo wings by claiming "I don't eat buffalo.
Simpson is also said to be in line to star
in a film version of the 60s sitcom I Dream of Jeanie.
