George Carlin's Last Words

11/06/2009
.
(PR) Free Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, Inc., is proud to announce that on November 10th it will publish LAST WORDS, the memoir of legendary comedian George Carlin written with the help of best-selling author Tony Hendra. The book will be a poignant and hilarious look at Carlin's extraordinary 50 plus year performance career, his body of work, and his personal life story.

For the last 14 years of his life, the brilliant and hilarious George Carlin, who died in June of 2008, worked on his autobiography. When Carlin died, Hendra approached Carlin's family about releasing the book. Based on hours of taped interviews, drafts, and polished chapters from their sessions, LAST WORDS is George Carlin's life story as it has never been told before. Even after his death, Carlin is apt to prove, he is still one of the funniest men who ever lived.

The voice in this book is pure Carlin with all the wit, charm, and mischievous insight that made him one of the most iconic and admired comedians of all time. The book is an irreverently funny, yet deeply honest, story about George's life, from birth to his childhood in Manhattan to life on the stage, blending his signature humor with never-before-told stories from his life to give us an honest look at a true genius at work.

Carlin's journey to stardom began in the rough and tumble neighborhoods of New York in the 1950s, where class and culture wars planted the seeds for some of his earliest material including the infamous Seven Dirty Words. Carlin tells all in a way they he never has before, talking about his major influences as an up and coming comic, sharing the origins of some of his most famous stand-up routines, and dishing about the people he met along the way. The people he encountered on his rise to stardom reads like a Who's Who of Show Business, from Lenny Bruce who took him under his wing to Hugh Hefner who gave him his first big shot.

In addition, Carlin spares no details as he describes his life and career as he discusses his own battle with substance abuse, his often turbulent relationships with the women in his life, and the politics that informed so much of his stand-up.

Carlin published three New York Times Best Selling books, including When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?, Brain Droppings, and Napalm and Silly Putty. LAST WORDS is a fitting addition to his long list of accomplishments.
