Felix Cartal Popular Music

02/02/2010
.
“I never liked music until I heard my own.” Felix Cartal. That’s one hell of statement. To be absolutely clear, Felix Cartal was joking when he said it. But listening to his debut LP, Popular Music (Dim Mak, Feb. 23), it’s hard not to wonder if he wasn’t just a little bit serious. Packed from start to finish with some truly dirty dance tracks, Popular Music is Felix’s definitive statement — a defense of heavy beats, distorted melodies, and epic buildups and breakdowns. And starting in February, Felix will be touring North America as a part of his Popular Music Tour.

The album kicks off with the eponymous opener, "Popular Music," a ravey, hard-house track built around a catchy vocal line, “Break-it down / Smash it up / Back to where you begin / Take it left / Take it right / Come on say it again.” It’s a perfect introduction to a record filled with heavy-hitting tracks like "Berlin," "Drone," and "Boy and His Computer." The tracks are unmistakably Felix Cartal’s, with his characteristic larger-than-life beats and catchy, fuzzed-out melodies. Felix is also joined by a number of special guests on the record. Johnny Whitney of The Blood Brothers and Jaguar Love collaborates Felix on "Volcano," adding his unmistakable vocals over Felix’s crunchy melodies. Todd Fink from The Faint lends his talent to "Why Wait," and Austrian newcomers Beta Bow guest on "I Believe In," Felix’s four-on-the-floor stomp.

Although a relative newcomer to the dance scene, Felix has already made quite the name for himself. Building a reputation off a stellar batch of early tracks, Felix has become one of the most sought after remixers, cutting tracks for artists like MSTRKRFT, Acid Kids, and Moving Units — not to mention his work with the pop icons like of Ashlee Simpson and Britney Spears. It’s no wonder that before he even had an EP under his belt, Felix was scoring opening spots for Justice and Busy P and getting picked up by Undocumented Management (LA Riots, The Bloody Beetroots, MSTRKRFT). His Dim Mak debut, The Skeleton EP, was heralded by the blogs and lauded by the press when it came out in May of ’09. Starting on February 11th, Felix will bring his music on the road.
