In addition to writing and playing every instrument on his solo endeavors, he records and produces them. Burn The Tapes once again exhibits his technical skills as a multi-instrumentalist.
Kenney implements experiences from his previous bands into his solo albums to give him his distinct sound. Thrashing guitars are remnants of his Philadelphia-based punk rock band, Supergrub, which was strongly influenced by Bad Brains. The heaviness of some songs is counterbalanced with funky grooves perfected from his stint with The Roots.
