Alter Bridge - Live From Amsterdam

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
Alter Bridge is the group that formed out of the ashes of Creed after the bulk of the group had a falling out with lead vocalist Scott Stapp and replaced him with former Mayfield Four vocalist Myles Kennedy. But the hatchet recently got buried and Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips reunited with Stapp for a new Creed album and tour, so where does that leave Alter Bridge? Probably right where they want to be---able to do whatever they want. According to the AB website the band is writing a new record for release in 2010, Kennedy is working on a solo record and Stapp is happy to share the band whenever Creed duties don't call. So despite rumors of Alter Bridge's demise, the franchise has been successful (five Top Ten hits) and will no doubt be carried on as long as the members can keep up the juggling act. In the meantime, AB fans will eat up this new concert film that was shot in Amsterdam last year. Twenty-four cameras capture the show in high-definition and while Kennedy and guitarist Tremonti get the bulk of the lens time, there are plenty of unique angles for each band member including some incredible fret board shots where cameras were apparently attached right to the guitars and bass. The performance takes awhile to get exciting though as the initial barrage of "Come to Life," "Find the Real," "Before Tomorrow Comes," "Brand New Start" and "White Knuckles" chugs along a bit mechanically, accented only by an occasional burst of guitar pyrotechnics from Tremonti. The show picks up steam though when the band thunders into the first half's climax, "Coming Home." Before it's all over Kennedy will break out his acoustic guitar for a thoughtful solo rendition of "Watch over You," Tremonti will put on a guitar clinic on "Ties That Bind" and Kennedy will have a showy moment playing slide guitar on Robert Johnson's "Traveling Riverside Blues." The show closes with the band's second biggest hit "Rise Today" and the Dutch fans go home happy as likely will most of Alter Bridge's stateside fans who view this film.
