Danzig - Deth Red Sabaoth

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
Thirty years ago the punk world was reveling in the music of the Misfits, an early Glenn Danzig band that, despite dubious musical ability, has stood the test of time and remains a fan favorite from the era. But for the past twenty-plus years Glenn has been honing a more mainstream hard rock/heavy metal sound in the eponymously-named Danzig. Danzig is one of those bands that you can compare to someone like Ozzy Osbourne---if you're familiar with some of their songs you're basically familiar with all of them---each act has a very definite "sound" that is easily recognizable. And both acts have a knack for composing fun songs that are filled with vaguely sinister imagery. Danzig is at the height of their game here with an offering full of radio-worthy numbers; "Ju Ju Bone," "Black Candy" and "On a Wicked Night" have the listener mindlessly nodding and singing along during the first listen while "Deth Red Moon" channels the basic sound and urgency of the Danzig oldie "Mother." Glenn's vocal style is often compared to Jim Morrison's and on slow sizzlers like "Seasons of Pain" he especially sounds like the late Doors singer. "Seasons of Pain" and "Left Hand Rise Above" also give guitarist Tommy Victor a little bit more space to solo; most of the album has him playing in short, speedy bursts but here he appends the loco-mosquito technique with lots of sustained notes. Deth Red Sabaoth is melodic yet foreboding; a perfection of the spooky-but-friendly sound Danzig has been working on since their debut release. This album supposedly completes a seven-album cycle that Glenn envisioned way back in 1987 so there's no telling where he'll take the band from here; in the meantime Danzig sound great right where they are.
