Megadeth - Rust in Peace Live

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
Megadeth's epic Rust in Peace album turned twenty-years-old this year and as is the fad lately the band went on tour specifically to showcase the album by playing it in its entirety every night. This film was shot at the Hollywood Palladium on March 31st on the last night of the tour and if there were any fluffs earlier in the tour they were worked out by this time. Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine is a known perfectionist with a reputation for not being that easy to work with and here he is all business, if you can call having a shredding good time business. Mustaine starts the show without fanfare, with only a quick introduction of "Good evening. You all know why we're here, right? Here we go." before the band blasts into Rust in Peace's lead-off track, "Holy Wars, the Punishment Due." Not another word is spoken by any band member during the performance of the album; even when bassist David Ellefson rallies the crowd mid-set during the intro to "Poison Was the Cure" he does so wordlessly. There's no going rogue during the performance either---no solos are added and no lyrics are improvised---the album is played as fans know it with the only difference being the live energy both from the band and from the rabid crowd. Mustaine is extremely precise with his speedy guitar playing and he remains spot on when he's singing in his gruff voice. It's a different story when he tries to hit the few high notes that some songs call for though and he sounds particularly queasy on "Lucretia" where he briefly channels the lunatic vocal style of Joe Walsh. No matter; that moment is over quickly and fans are more concerned with his work on his Flying V anyway and they loudly voice their approval as the set wraps up with "Rust in Peace…Polaris." When the song ends Mustaine finally speaks again, barely, saying only "And that was Rust in Peace." After leaving the stage briefly the band returns and a now shirtless Mustaine introduces the band (Chris Broderick on guitar and Shawn Drover on drums) during a reprise of "Holy Wars," showing particular affection for his longtime on-again off-again band mate Ellefson. Six bonus cuts including "She Wolf," "Symphony of Destruction" and "Peace Sells" are included along with some backstage and rehearsal footage .
