Rock Reads: Guitar Player Presents: Guitar Heroes of the '70s by Michael Molenda (editor)

Back in the '70s you had to listen to what was called free-form underground radio, the format that morphed into progressive radio, to hear some of the artists profiled in Guitar Heroes of the '70s. Guys like Lenny Breau and Roy Buchanan are well-known in guitarist circles and got airplay decades ago but they never made it to household-name status. Maybe this set of interview pieces, culled from Guitar Player magazine, will inspire readers to seek out music from Breau and Buchanan, but if not there's lots of fan-friendly reading here about plenty of ax men that you do know: Clapton, Frampton, Garcia, Blackmore, Beck, Page, Zappa, Trower, Van Halen, Townshend, Gilmour and many more. At just a few pages per profile nothing gets too in-depth but there are plenty of informative nuggets to unearth, like the fact that two of the artists that Jimi Hendrix liked to listen to most were Nina Simone and the bombastic Mountain. Whether you read this one fast in one sitting or take it a guitarist-a-day, it's a definite keeper.
