Pearl Jam - vs & Vitalogy 3-CD Deluxe Edition: Tag Team Pt I

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
It's been a twenty-year run for Pearl Jam so far and 2011 will be packed with all kinds of special events and products to celebrate the band's having reached the double-decade anniversary.

Two of the band's seminal albums, vs and Vitalogy, have been reissued in remastered form with a few previously unreleased bonus cuts appended to each and they are available for purchase separately.

But it's really a no-brainer for fans to grab this special two-fer package holding both albums because it also contains, on a third CD, something that many consider to be the holy grail of Pearl Jam live recordings; the April 12, 1994 show from Boston's Orpheum Theater.

The concert opens with the sedate "Oceans" but then explodes with a high-energy take on "Even Flow" and a take on the Dead Boy's "Sonic Reducer" featuring Mudhoney singer Mark Arm. Singer Eddie Vedder doesn't indulge in a lot of between-song patter, sticking pretty much to quick song introductions or sly comments like "This song is about people who don't have taste but they like us anyway" as an intro to "Not For You."

The guys dig into deep album tracks like "Rats," "Blood" and "Release" for the middle of the set, ultimately building to show's end with a cover of Neil Young's "F*#kin' Up," the funky "Dirty Frank," "Rearviewmirror" and the sing-along demanding "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town."
