Zakk Wylde Talks About Iron Maiden Egg Tossing Incident
KNAC has a great new interview with Zakk Wyle where they cover a lot of topics including the infamous "egg tossing" incident at Ozzfest where Sharon Osbourne led the attack against Iron Maiden. Here is Zakk's take on the whole thing:

Wylde: Well, the whole thing is ridiculous. What it should have been down to is Mom [Ozzy's wife/manager Sharon Osbourne] should've just talked with their manager and just said, "Hey, look it. Tell your guy to shut the f**k up. And if he mentions one more thing, you guys are off the tour." That's it. You're done. And if their manager, Rod [Smallwood], went over to them — because they're all f**king grown-ups — and said, "Dude, enough of the f**king bagging on The Boss [Ozzy]. First off, it's their f**king tour." And that's the end of the conversation. The minute he goes back there and says, "Oh, f**k this. We don't need a reality TV show, f**k Ozzy, this and that, bla bla bla..." then you know what? Pull the power on them right there. Have a guy sitting on the side of the stage every f**king night and the minute he says one bad thing about Ozzy, break his f**king legs and you're off and you're on your way. That's it. Done.

KNAC.COM: So that's what was really going on? Wylde: It should have never got to eggs. If anyone ever threw eggs at me, I'd break their f**king legs, dude. I'd stop the show right there and whoever was throwing the f**king eggs — I'd f**kin' morgue them. I wouldn't hospitalize them. I'd f**kin' kill them, right there. I'm looking at both sides. If I was Iron Maiden, I'd f**k some people up. And, if I find out who's responsible for it, they're getting f**ked up, too. I mean, I'd never go up onstage and start bagging on whoever the headliner is. If anything, all I ever do is thank the band for letting us play with them. When I opened up for Ted Nugent and Lynyrd Skynyrd, I thought, this is such an honor to be playing with these guys. Why would I say anything bad about them? You know what I mean? And on top of that, you're getting paid. It's so f**kin' ridiculous. It's a f**kin' joke. I had no idea. I was just like, "Whatever, man." I'm telling you right now — the way I would have handled it would be, "Hey, guy. You tell your singer to shut the f**k up or hands down, I'll break his f**kin' neck. I'll break his legs first, then I'll break his f**kin' neck. Then you'll have no singer. So he can't say sh*t. Throw eggs? I'll slit his f**kin' throat, dude. I'd say, "f**k you!" F**kin' throw eggs? Are you f**kin' kidding me? What, are we in second grade here? Come on. Throw eggs? Throw f**kin' grenades, now. You motherf**ker. That whole thing should have just never happened. It should've been, "Tell him to shut up or the guy's off tour." That's it. Then his manager would have said, "Dude, enough of the talking, slagging the headlining act." I mean, how old are we here, dude? How old is Bruce Dickinson? You'd expect that out of an 18-year old, like the Battle of the Bands in high school? What do you think about it?

Singled Out: Toadies' Feeler
Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Mark Reznicek from Toadies tells us about their new album "Feeler," which finally hits stores today after a dozen year wait. It's quite a story; we now turn it over to Mark:

In August of 1996, we finished two years of solid touring for our debut album, Rubberneck. During the course of those two years, the album had gone gold and then platinum. Way beyond our wildest dreams. So, after the tour was over, we parted ways with our guitar player Darrel and held auditions for a new guy. Eventually we chose Clark, and began writing and rehearsing songs in earnest. Every so often, we'd submit demos of our latest batch of songs to our label, and finally they determined we had enough songs to go in the studio and record an album.

So, in January of 1998, we went into Pedernales Studio in Spicewood, Texas (outside Austin) with producer Paul Leary (of the legendary Butthole Surfers). This was in the early days of ProTools, a new-ish technology without much precedent. After a month and a half, with the basic drum and bass tracks done, we moved to Austin's Arlen studio for overdubs. During this time, SXSW was going on, and a lot of our friends from various DFW bands came into town (like Baboon and Caulk), and we hung out and partied and went to a few rock shows. It was a nice break from the tedium and tension of the studio.

By this point there had been several disagreements with the producer and his manager (who also happened to be our manager, too). This led to arguments with both of them and between all of us in the band. It seemed like there was a lot of pressure to create this follow-up to our big million-seller, and everyone was feeling it. Finally, around the end of March or early April, the album was completely recorded. All that was needed was a "big name" to mix it (the label wanted a "big name" to attach to it). Somehow in the midst of all this, the label decided that they didn't hear a single in the fifteen tracks we had recorded (that they'd already approved!). The entire recording, as well as the last year and a half of our lives, was down the tubes.

Eventually we came up with some new songs, rearranged a few of the songs from the Austin sessions, and recorded Hell Below/Stars Above, the long-awaited (by us anyway) follow-up to Rubberneck with Rob Schnapf and Tom Rothrock, the production team we had worked with on Rubberneck. By the time the label got around to releasing the album in Spring 2001, 7 years had passed since our last album, a lifetime in the music industry. We went on tour, only to find that a substantial portion of our fan base had moved on. After a few months, our bass player Lisa decided she'd had enough and announced she was quitting the band. A day or two later, Todd, our singer (and the guy who started the band in the first place) announced he was breaking the band up. So in a roundabout way, Feeler was the album that broke the Toadies back.

Well, a few years later we were asked to reunite for a special, high-paying gig. We did it and it was fun, and then we all went back to what we were doing (I was playing in a country band, Todd had started another band, and Clark was editing film out in California). The following year, we were offered another tidy sum to reunite again, which we did and which ultimately led to a full-on reunion: a new album, a new tour, and even some new fans thanks to our inclusion in the Guitar Hero II game.

Talk would always come back around to that rejected album from 1998. By this point it had been leaked out onto the internet, and was traded and discussed by our fans, who often asked when we were going to release it. After some discussion, we decided it would be better to re-record our favorite songs from that session rather than just mix the old tracks from 1998. So, in late Spring of 2010, we got together with Rob Schnapf (who had already done Rubberneck and Hell Below with us) and recorded the best songs from that long ago era, with a few lyric and arrangement tweaks. And so the album that was meant to be our 2nd became our 4th, Feeler, and is finally seeing the light of day in the Summer of 2010.

Alice Cooper's Tour Manager Recounts Sonisphere Storm Havoc
We ran a story yesterday about the freak storm which played havoc on Sonisphere in Finland on Sunday. Today we received a first hand account from Alice Cooper's Tour Manager Toby Mamis about what happened:

We all survived Sonisphere Finland. An amazing experience for all of us who were there -- bands, crews, and fans alike. At around 3:45 PM, during the set change on the main stage after Slayer and before Alice, with Alice's crew setting up the gear, and Maiden's crew beginning to set up THEIR gear behind Alice, a tornado-like "weather event" hit the festival site, with the two stages right in the bullseye.

At the second stage, Iggy & The Stooges were about to go on, and Motley's crew were setting up their gear to follow the Stooges. Both stages got hit hard, with the second stage rendered useless when part of the ground support (which holds up the lighting, sound and roof) collapsed. On the main stage, the huge Sonisphere backdrop was ripped off the back of the stage, and crashed down onto Alice's equipment truck. Thankfully, nobody on either stage was seriously injured, though there were a lot of cuts, scrapes, abrasions, headaches, and frayed nerves. - more

When Joe Perry Met Jimmy Page
Gibson.com has the tale of when Joe met Jimmy: Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry recently said that meeting Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and playing with him in 1990 was beyond the realm of possibility.

"I would never have thought it would have been possible growing up in Boston in the late '60s, when the idea of being in London was like for a Catholic going to the Vatican, the holy grail," he told DigitalSpy.com. "The fact that 20 years down the line I'd not only know Jimmy Page but be able to play with him, that was beyond anything I thought could ever happen.

"People call Aerosmith the American Stones, but we were always the American Zeppelin." Perry said that he was blown away by Page's talent, but also by his desire to get to know the band. "He travelled with us on the bus and we hung out with him for the whole weekend," he said. "It blows my mind to think that Jimmy would think that much of the band that he'd want to spend that much time hanging out with us and then play with us." - more on this story

Pantera After Shows Fueled By Taco Bell?
The Metal Den has published a portion of an actual tour rider for Pantera from back when the legendary Texas groove metal act destroyed stages all across the world.

The band loved Taco Bell so much that they demanded at least one of their roadies make 'the run for the border' and not watch any of the act's encores so they'd have food waiting for when Philip, Dime, Vinnie and Rex came off the stage.

Before their untimely breakup in 2003, Pantera was the undisputed kings of metal. This coming August 20 is the birthday of the band's late great guitarist Dimebag Darrell, who was shot and killed on stage while performing with his other band Damageplan on Dec 8, 2004. - more on this story
