Queen's Big 40th Anniversary
(Gibson) After almost 40 years with EMI, rock legends Queen have signed a deal with Universal Music Group, according to Reuters. Re-releases of the band's studio albums have been announced for 2011, which also marks Queen's 40th anniversary. "We are very excited, after all this time, to be embarking on a new phase of our career – with a new record company, with new ideas and new dreams," Queen guitarist Brian May said in a statement.

The switch from EMI to Universal has been rumored since May but was only recently confirmed. This marks another high-profile loss for EMI, who have parted ways with The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Radiohead in recent years.

Starting in 2011, Queen albums will appear on Universal subsidiary Island Records. Reportedly, the label will release each of the band's 15 studio albums with bonus content and remastered sound. In March, the first five re-releases – Queen, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races – will hit stores and online retailers. - more on this story

MTV To Publish Ronnie James Dio's Memoir
Wendy Dio said this was coming and there is now a deal in place to publish Ronnie James Dio's memoir. The literary agency which brokered the deal sent us the following details:

Rainbow in the Dark: The Autobiography of Ronnie James Dio, the revealing memoir of the heavy metal master, was sold at auction to Jacob Hoye, Senior Director of Publishing at MTV Books, by Shawna Morey, in her first deal at Folio Literary Management, LLC. Renowned for his powerful, hard-driving vocals, Dio, lends that unique voice to recount his extraordinary journey from early pioneer in a burgeoning music movement to his undisputed reign atop the heavy metal landscape. He was born in a time and to a family so far removed from the hard-rocking world he would dominate for nearly five decades, but his unbounded passion and peerless talent broke barriers and legitimized heavy metal as an alternative art form. His creative genius made him a legend.

With nearly five decades of worldwide success and album sales in the tens of millions as the front man of Elf, Rainbow, Dio, Black Sabbath, and, most recently, Heaven & Hell, Ronnie James Dio grabbed the mic, took the stage, and led a movement whose influence resonates to this day. In Rainbow in the Dark, Dio himself will introduce the reader to this incredible life and the over 50 photographs included will provide readers with an unprecedented all-access pass to the rock concert of a lifetime. - more on this story

Drive-By Truckers Announce New CD, DVD and Record Store Day Special Release
Drive-By Truckers have announced the release of a new album, a DVD and a special record store day release. Here is the official word: will release Go-Go Boots, on February 15, 2011 on ATO Records.

Go-Go Boots is their eleventh record and was produced by their longtime producer, David Barbe (Deerhunter, Bettye LaVette, Sugar). In conjunction with Go-Go Boots, they'll also be releasing their documentary The Secret to a Happy Ending on DVD.

Go-Go Boots builds on their roots with the old Muscle Shoals country-and-soul sound. "We recorded nearly 40 songs last year and into this year and fairly early on divided it into two separate albums" explains DBT co-founder Patterson Hood. "The Big To-Do, released first, was the more straight forward "Rock" album. Go-Go Boots is what I sometimes (semi-jokingly) refer to as our country, soul, and murder ballad album. Those elements definitely play into it, but it's a little more open ended than that."

Jim Morrison May Get Indecent Exposure And Profanity Pardon
(Gibson) During his last few months in office, Florida Governor Charlie Crist is thinking about pardoning Jim Morrison, according to TheHill.com. The Doors lead singer was famously convicted of indecent exposure and profanity following a 1969 concert in Miami. Morrison died in 1971.

"Candidly, it's something that I haven't given a lot of thought to, but it's something I'm willing to look into in the time I have left," said Crist, who chose to run for a seat in the Senate (but lost) instead of running for re-election. "Anything is possible."

Morrison, a native Floridian, was charged with indecent exposure, profanity, drunkenness, and lewd and lascivious behavior after a Doors concert on March 1, 1969. Although even his bandmates said he was drunk, Morrison was cleared of that charge (as well as the lewd and lascivious charge), but convicted of the other two. Due to his 1971 death, the frontman never served any prison time. - more on this story

Singled Out: Kate Miller-Heidke's Caught in the Crowd
Today Kate Miller-Heidke tells us about "Caught in the Crowd" from her album "Curioser" which has already gone platinum in Australia and she's looking to make her mark state-side. Here is the story:

"Caught in the Crowd" started with a simple, cycling, four chord guitar part that we (my collaborator/husband Keir Nuttall) had floating about for a while. At the time we were listening a lot to the Public Enemy song "He Got Game", which is a wistful and inspiring piece of hip hop. We realised that if we played around with cramming lots of syllables into each verse like a hip-hop tune, we could put a lot more detail into what is essentially a folk/pop song.

I've always like songs with stories, and "Caught In the Crowd" tells the story not of being bullied, or being a bully, but of being a bystander. People often ask me if the character of James is a real person and if the events in the song really happened. Well, all the things in the story are true, but they are more combinations of people both Keir and I went to school with, amalgamated into one character. I think we all did things in school we're not too proud of.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album, plus grab dates including a big show this Thursday in Washington D.C. at the 9:30 Club - right here!

Jack White and Norah Jones Join Danger Mouse
(Gibson) Danger Mouse has recruited Jack White and Norah Jones for a new album. The DJ/producer/musician, who is also known as Brian Burton, brought in the stars for his collaboration with Italian composer Daniele Luppi.

"I definitely wanted a man and a woman," Burton told NME. "The female vocal needed to be soft, not polarizing. But the male needed to have a bit more angst to it."

And that's where Jack White came in. "I played some of the music for Jack White when I was on tour shortly after doing the first session, just to show him what I was doing… he liked it, but at the time I wasn't even thinking of using him – you know, it's Jack White," he said. "But in the end, I thought, 'He's really into it – why not?' He tried it in different voices – a high voice, a low voice, and I thought, 'Why don't we leave them all in?' There's a bunch of his vocals on [the song] 'Rose with the Broken Neck,' and it doesn't always sound like him." - more on this story

Lou Reed Collaborates With Susan Boyle
(Gibson) Apparently Lou Reed isn't always as vicious as some might assume. The 68-year-old former Velvet Underground frontman had initially banned Scottish vocal phenomenon Susan Boyle from singing his tune, "Perfect Day," on an episode of TV's America's Got Talent.

But, after an apparent change of heart, Reed not only sanctioned a Boyle cover of the song — one of the standout tracks from Reed's 1972 Transformer album — but he also became creatively involved in the production of Boyle's video for the song. The atmospheric video was shot around the banks of Loch Lomond, and Reed told Scotland's Sunday Mail, "I wanted to create a beautiful and intimate piece shot in Susan's native Scotland and she quickly agreed."

Boyle had previously been quoted as calling Reed "childish" for not allowing her to sing "Perfect Day" on television, but after working together, she said, "I loved that Lou understood how much it meant to me to film in Scotland. I didn't mind how much it rained or blew a gale — I enjoyed every minute." - more on this story

Frampton Does Oprah
(Gibson) Peter Frampton appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show last week as a featured guest during Oprah's series of "Teen Heartthrob Surprises" programs.

As he was introduced, Frampton and his band kicked into "Show Me the Way," and the crowd —most quite well past their teen years — welcomed him with classic, heartthrob-induced shrieks and screams (Frampton responded to the crowd energy with an especially playful talkbox solo).

Later, in an interview segment, Oprah asked Frampton what it was like to be a rock star, to which he responded with a laugh, "I'm a musician now." When she asked about the intensity of crowd responses he's been famous for, Frampton said, "That is amazing, and the fact that it happens this many years after I first started is still amazing." - more on this story
